HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect from another Wailea resort until I actually stayed at the Fairmont Kea Lani. The thing that hits you first – before you even check in – is that this place is massive, and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s the only all-suite resort on Maui, which sounds like marketing speak until you’re actually sprawling out in what feels like a legitimate apartment rather than a cramped hotel room.

The location on Wailea Alanui Drive puts you right in the sweet spot of South Maui’s resort corridor, but here’s what the brochures don’t tell you: you’re walking distance to some seriously good food that isn’t resort pricing. There’s this little spot called Monkeypod Kitchen maybe ten minutes down the road where locals actually eat, and the staff will point you toward other hidden gems if you ask. The resort itself sits on Polo Beach, which is pretty stunning – I mean, it’s no secret spot, but the sand is that powdery white stuff you see in postcards, and the snorkeling off the rocks to the left is surprisingly decent. Just watch out for the occasional monk seal; they’re protected (obviously) but also kind of territorial.

What really won me over was the attention to detail that you don’t notice until day two or three. The pools – there are three of them – never felt crowded even during peak season, probably because the resort is so spread out. The waterslide is admittedly touristy, but if you’ve got kids, it’s a godsend. Pool service is quick without being pushy, and they remember your drink order, which is a small thing that makes a big difference when you’re trying to actually relax. The spa is tucked away in this quiet corner where you can barely hear the ocean, which sounds wrong but is actually perfect when you want to completely zone out. Parking is complimentary and abundant – I know that sounds boring, but you’ll appreciate it when you’re driving back from Haleakala at sunset and don’t want to circle around looking for a spot.

One thing that surprised me: the evening keiki (kid) activities are genuinely well-run, not just babysitting with a fancy name. My friends dropped their kids off for the cultural programs and actually got to enjoy dinner without someone asking for the iPad every five minutes. The resort does get busy around 4 PM when people return from day trips – Road to Hana, snorkeling at Molokini, that sort of thing – but it settles down nicely by evening. Room service is solid, though honestly, with all the restaurant options within a short drive, I’d save the money and explore a bit. The concierge team knows their stuff about island activities and won’t just push the expensive excursions, which I appreciated. You know what really sealed it for me though? The housekeeping staff left these little origami towel animals that were actually creative, not the same tired swan everyone does. Small touches like that make you feel like someone’s paying attention.

We were upgraded from partial ocean view to deluxe ocean view. The room was very spacious. Loved the Nespresso machine and the convenience of having microwave and refrigerator. The food at restaurants was excellent but pricey.
