HOTEL OVERVIEW
Okay, so first things first – when you pull up to Four Seasons Resort Rancho Encantado, you’re not actually in Santa Fe proper. You’re about twenty minutes north on State Road 592, which honestly works in the resort’s favor because you get this incredible sense of space that you’d never find closer to the Plaza. The drive out there winds through proper high desert country, and suddenly you’re at this sprawling adobe-style resort that feels like it grew right out of the landscape.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to make luxury feel completely at home in New Mexico. I mean, you’ve got your typical Four Seasons polish – the kind where someone remembers your name and your coffee order after one day – but it doesn’t feel stuffy or out of place against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. The casitas are spread out so you’re not staring into someone else’s window, and each one has these private patios where you can actually see the stars at night (the light pollution out there is basically nonexistent). The spa is legitimately impressive, built around this central courtyard that stays cool even when it’s blazing hot outside, and they do this thing with local botanicals that actually makes sense instead of feeling gimmicky.
Now, the dining situation is solid – Terra restaurant has this chef who clearly understands southwestern flavors without going overboard on the green chile everything approach. But honestly? Some of my best meals were just sitting on my casita’s patio with room service and watching the sunset paint the mountains. The pool area gets busy during peak season (think October when the aspens are turning, or during Indian Market in August), but even then it never feels crowded because of how spread out everything is. One thing to know – if you’re planning to head into Santa Fe for dinner or shopping, you’ll want to factor in that drive time, especially if you’ve had a few margaritas on the Plaza. But that’s kind of the point of staying out here; it forces you to slow down and actually experience the high desert instead of just rushing between tourist spots. The 8.7 rating makes sense to me – it’s exceptional without being perfect, which feels very New Mexican somehow.
