Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to the Camelback Inn – I mean, you hear “JW Marriott” and sometimes that just means fancy corporate vibes, you know? But this place actually surprised me. The moment you drive up Lincoln Drive (which, fair warning, can get pretty busy during snowbird season), you’re hit with this sprawling desert property that feels more like an old Arizona ranch than a typical resort chain. The low-slung casitas scattered across the property blend right into the desert landscape, and you can see Camelback Mountain looming right there – not just some distant backdrop, but actually close enough that you feel like you’re part of the scenery.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to keep that authentic Southwestern charm while still delivering on the luxury stuff. The spa is honestly incredible – they use desert botanicals in their treatments, and I’m not talking about some gimmicky cactus facial, but treatments that actually make sense for the climate and location. The pools are well, there are several of them, and each has its own personality. The main pool area can get crowded (especially weekends when locals day-pass it), but there are quieter spots if you explore a bit. And here’s something nobody tells you – the best time to enjoy the grounds is right around sunset when the desert light hits those red rocks and everything looks like a postcard, except it’s real and you’re actually there with a drink in your hand.

The rooms themselves feel substantial – thick adobe walls that actually keep things cool, and most have these private patios where you can sit outside without feeling like you’re on display. I stayed during March (prime season, so everything was bustling), but even then it never felt overwhelming. The restaurants are solid, though honestly, you’re in Scottsdale – there’s amazing food everywhere within a ten-minute drive. What I appreciated was that the staff seemed to actually know the area. When I asked about hiking Camelback, the concierge didn’t just hand me a brochure but gave me real advice about timing and which trailhead to use depending on my skill level. Oh, and parking is easy, which sounds silly but if you’ve dealt with some Scottsdale properties during high season, you’ll appreciate not circling around looking for a spot. The whole place just feels like it belongs where it is, which is rarer than you’d think for a big chain property. It’s the kind of place where you can actually relax instead of feeling like you need to constantly be “experiencing” something.
