HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at a bunch of places along Kaanapali Beach, and honestly? The Sheraton Maui just hits different. You know that stretch right where the beach path curves toward Black Rock – that’s where they’ve planted this place, and I mean, the location alone is worth talking about. Walking out of the lobby, you’re maybe thirty seconds from sand that’s actually swimmable (not always a given on this side of the island), and the snorkeling around Black Rock is legitimately some of the best you’ll find without getting on a boat.

The property itself has this sort of sprawling, tropical campus vibe – it’s not one of those cramped high-rises where you’re fighting for pool space. Actually, there are multiple pools scattered around, which means you can usually find a quieter spot if the main one gets too scene-y. The rooms are solid four-star territory, nothing groundbreaking but they’ve clearly been keeping up with renovations. What I really appreciated was the lanai setup – most rooms have decent outdoor space where you can actually sit with your morning coffee without feeling like you’re in a fishbowl. Pro tip: the ocean-view rooms on the higher floors are worth the upgrade if you can swing it, especially for sunset viewing.

Here’s what really sets it apart though – the staff actually seems to know the area. When I asked about hiking spots beyond the obvious tourist traps, the concierge pointed me toward some lesser-known trails in the West Maui Mountains that locals frequent. And parking? It’s handled, which sounds basic but you’d be surprised how many Maui hotels make that a headache. The spa is genuinely good (I’m usually skeptical of hotel spas), and they use a lot of local ingredients that aren’t just marketing gimmicks. The restaurants on-site are decent but honestly, you’re so close to Lahaina that you’d be missing out not to explore – it’s like a ten-minute drive to Front Street where the real food scene is. One thing to know: this place can get busy during peak season (think December through April), so if you’re someone who needs complete tranquility, maybe aim for late spring or early fall. The 8.0 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it’s the kind of place where everything just works the way it should, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to unwind in paradise.

I highly recommend an evening or two in the Bar and Grill. The staff are lovely and helpfu, evening coulture events of music, hula dancing and cliff dive were wonderful pleasant. We had dinner in here several evenings during our stay. Grounds and gardens are spacious and very well maintained. I was one of several guests who enjoyed watching the palm trees being trimmed.
There were some guests who felt it acceptable to leave used coffee cups, towels etc. anywhere they pleased, but staff were very quick to clean up after them.
Some areas could be updated, but given the Islands, to be praised, sustainabilty goals, I am more than happy to stay in a hotel that does keep refurbishing.
