HOTEL OVERVIEW

I’ll be honest — when I first pulled up the winding Highlands Drive to the Hyatt Carmel Highlands, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The approach is pretty dramatic actually, with all these curves hugging the coastline, and then suddenly you’re there at this sprawling property that feels like it’s been carved right into the clifftop. The first thing that hits you is the view, obviously — I mean, you’re literally perched above the Pacific with Carmel Bay stretching out below. But what struck me more was how the whole place has this sort of weathered elegance, like it’s been here forever even though you can tell they’ve kept everything updated.

The location is honestly perfect if you want that Big Sur mystique without actually driving all the way up Highway 1 (which, let’s face it, can be a bit much with all the construction delays lately). You’re close enough to walk down to Yankee Point — well, it’s more of a careful scramble down the trail — and Carmel proper is just a quick drive when you want the fairy-tale cottage scene and decent restaurants. The rooms themselves are comfortable in that Hyatt way where everything works like it should, though I wouldn’t call them particularly memorable design-wise. What you’re really paying for is waking up to those floor-to-ceiling windows with the ocean right there, especially if you snag one of the upper-level rooms facing west. The sound of the waves is constant but not overwhelming — actually pretty soothing once you get used to it.

You know what I really appreciated? The staff seems to genuinely know the area, not just the standard tourist recommendations. The front desk guy told me about this little pull-off spot about a mile north where you can watch the sea otters without crowds, and he was absolutely right. The on-site restaurant is decent enough for breakfast — their coffee is surprisingly good — though honestly, you’ll probably want to venture into Carmel-by-the-Sea for dinner most nights. Fair warning: parking can get tight during peak season (basically any sunny weekend from April through October), and the rates definitely reflect that Carmel premium. But if you’re looking for that classic California coastal experience without the fuss of trying to book something right in town, this place delivers. It’s not going to blow you away with luxury touches, but it nails the location and gives you exactly what you came to the area for — those endless ocean views and easy access to some of the most gorgeous coastline you’ll find anywhere.

The view from out sea view room was fantastic, as is the view from the restaurant where we had breakfast. Watching whales while having breakfast was a first.

It was a real disappointment. I booked a ocean view room. We couldn’t see the ocean, but just the white fog. I asked if the weather was normal at the end of july: fog and 12 Celsius degrees. They answer it is always like this, and just a few days of the year you can actually have no fog… the pool is closed but you wouldn’t use it anyway.. it’s too...

They answer it is always like this, and just a few days of the year you can actually have no fog… the pool is closed but you wouldn’t use it anyway.. it’s too cold! It seems a November weather.. the only positive thing was the breakfast! Really good!
