HOTEL OVERVIEW
I’ll be honest – when you first pull up to the Marriott Sanibel Harbour Resort, you might wonder if you took a wrong turn somewhere. The drive down Harbour Pointe feels a bit isolated, like you’re heading into some residential development rather than toward a resort. But then you round that last curve and suddenly there’s this massive tower rising up from the water, and you realize you’ve found something pretty special tucked away on the south side of the Caloosahatchee River.
The thing that really gets you about this place is the water access – I mean, you’re literally surrounded by it. The marina side faces the river where you’ll see everything from little fishing boats to some seriously impressive yachts, while the other side opens up to the bay with views that stretch all the way out toward Sanibel Island (hence the name, obviously). The pool area is where most people end up spending their afternoons, and honestly, it’s hard to leave once you claim a spot. There’s this lazy river that winds around – nothing too fancy, but perfect for floating with a drink. The kids go absolutely nuts for it, which is either a blessing or a curse depending on your perspective. What I really appreciate is how they’ve got different zones, so you can find quieter spots if you’re not in the mood for all the splashing.
The rooms themselves are pretty solid for a four-star property, though some feel a bit dated depending on which tower you end up in. Pro tip: definitely worth asking for a water view when you book because the difference is night and day. The spa gets talked up a lot, and while it’s nice, it’s not going to blow your mind – more like a good hotel spa than a destination in itself. What really works here is the location for exploring this part of Southwest Florida. You’re maybe fifteen minutes from the Sanibel Causeway, which means easy access to both Sanibel and Captiva without having to deal with island hotel prices. Fort Myers Beach is a quick drive south, and if you’re into the Edison and Ford Winter Estates, you’re perfectly positioned for that too. The resort runs a shuttle to some nearby spots, though honestly, you’ll probably want a car. Parking’s free, which is refreshing since so many places nickel and dime you these days. The staff generally knows their stuff about local recommendations – they’ll steer you toward the less touristy spots for shelling or where to catch the best sunset without fighting crowds. It’s that kind of place where you can base yourself for a proper Southwest Florida experience while still having all the resort amenities when you want to just stay put and relax.
