HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of Big Island resorts, and the Waikoloa Beach Marriott hits this sweet spot that’s honestly pretty hard to find. It’s not trying to be the flashiest place on the Kohala Coast – that’s the Grand Waikoloan down the beach – but there’s something refreshingly real about it that I actually prefer.

The location is what really gets me. You’re right on Anaeho’omalu Bay (locals just call it A-Bay), and I mean *right* on it. Not like some places where you need a shuttle to see water. The beach here is this gorgeous crescent of white sand, and here’s the thing most people don’t realize – it’s one of the best spots on the island for watching both sunrise and sunset because of how the bay curves. The ancient fishponds right behind the beach add this cool historical element too, though honestly, most guests just walk past them without knowing they’re looking at 600-year-old Hawaiian aquaculture. The resort itself feels… well, it’s definitely a Marriott, so you know what you’re getting in terms of service and that sort of reliable comfort. But the Hawaiian touches feel genuine rather than slapped on – the lobby opens right up to trade winds, and they’ve got these beautiful koa wood accents throughout. The pools are solid (there’s a fun waterslide the kids always love), though if I’m being totally honest, you’ll probably spend more time at the beach anyway since it’s literally right there.

What I really appreciate is how it sits in relation to everything else. You can walk the coastal trail north to the Hilton – it’s about a 15-minute stroll along the water, perfect for sunset – or head south toward the Mauna Kea. The Kings’ Shops and Queens’ MarketPlace are close enough that you don’t need to drive, which is clutch because parking at those shopping centers can be a nightmare during peak season. And speaking of driving, the resort’s right off Waikoloa Beach Drive, so you’re not dealing with the winding resort roads that some places make you navigate. The rooms are what you’d expect from a 4-star Marriott – clean, comfortable, nothing revolutionary but nothing to complain about either. Ocean view rooms are worth the upgrade if you can swing it, especially on higher floors. You’ll catch those trade winds better, and the sound of waves is way more pleasant than the occasional maintenance golf cart puttering around below. Staff has always been solid in my experience – not over-the-top aloha theater, just genuinely helpful folks who seem to actually live here rather than being flown in for the season.

Here’s why I keep coming back though: it feels like a place where you can actually relax without constantly being sold something. The beach is never crowded, the pool area doesn’t turn into a party scene, and you can grab a decent meal without needing reservations three days out. It’s gotten a 7.9 rating, which honestly feels about right – not perfect, but really dependable. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want when you’re trying to decompress in paradise.

Enjoyed continental breakfast every day. Very friendly hostess and servers. Loved the view, didn’t love all the birds that “attacked” tables as soon as guests got up.
