You know what caught me off guard about the Sonesta Resort on Hilton Head? It’s actually tucked away in Shipyard Plantation in a way that makes you feel like you’ve discovered something, even though it’s been there forever. I mean, you’re literally a five-minute walk from some of the island’s best golf courses, but the resort itself feels surprisingly peaceful – none of that constant golf cart traffic you get at some places.

The property sits right on the beach, which honestly is the main draw here. Not the manicured, crowded resort beach you might expect, but actual Hilton Head coastline where you can walk for miles if you want. The rooms are solid – not fancy, but they’ve got that coastal vibe down without going overboard on the nautical theme (thank god, because some places here really lean into the anchor decor). Most have decent balconies, and if you can swing an oceanview room, do it. The sound of the waves actually drowns out any noise from Greenwood Drive, which can get busy during peak season. Speaking of seasons – summer’s obviously packed, but late spring and early fall are sweet spots when the weather’s still great but you’re not fighting crowds for pool chairs.

What I really appreciate is how the staff seems to get that this isn’t Charleston or Savannah – people come here to chill out, not be impressed by white-glove service. They’re helpful without being hovery, you know? The resort’s got all the standard stuff – pools, fitness center, restaurant – but it’s the location that makes it work. You’re close enough to Coligny Plaza that you can walk there for dinner (about 15 minutes along the beach), but far enough from the chaos that you’re not dealing with spring break energy if that’s not your thing. Plus, parking’s actually decent here, which sounds boring but trust me, matters when you’re trying to explore the island. The whole Shipyard area feels more residential and calm compared to staying right in the thick of things, but you’re still central enough that nowhere on the island is more than a 20-minute drive. Honestly, for a solid four-star spot that lets you experience Hilton Head without the resort feeling like it’s trying too hard, this place hits the mark.
