Hawks Cay Resort

61 Hawks Cay Boulevard, Duck Key, Marathon, FL 33050, United States
HOTEL OVERVIEW
So here’s the thing about Hawks Cay Resort – it’s one of those places that actually lives up to the whole “tropical getaway” promise, but in a way that feels real rather than manufactured. You know what I mean? I’ve stayed at plenty of Florida resorts that try too hard, but this one just sort of… works. Maybe it’s because Duck Key itself is still relatively undiscovered compared to Key West or even Islamorada, so you get that authentic Keys vibe without fighting crowds for everything.
The resort sits right on the water (obviously), and honestly, the views from most rooms are pretty spectacular. What I didn’t expect was how quiet it actually gets here – especially if you’re coming from Miami or even Marathon proper. The sound of the water is constant but not overwhelming, and there’s this nice breeze that seems to pick up every afternoon around 3 PM like clockwork. The dolphin encounter program is legitimately cool, though I’ll warn you that it books up fast during snowbird season (basically December through March). I watched some of the sessions from the beach area and the trainers clearly know their stuff – it’s not just a tourist trap, which was refreshing.
What really sets Hawks Cay apart, though, is the layout. It sprawls across the key in a way that never feels cramped, even when they’re at capacity. The main pool area gets busy around midday, but there are these smaller pools tucked away that most people seem to miss. The marina side is where you want to hang out if you’re into watching the boats come and go – there’s always something happening there, from fishing charters heading out at dawn to fancy yachts pulling in for fuel. The restaurants are actually decent too, which isn’t always a given at resort properties. Angler & Ale has this grouper sandwich that’s become sort of legendary among locals, and the tiki bar makes a mean rum runner (though honestly, every place in the Keys claims theirs is the best). The only real downside is that you’re pretty isolated here – it’s about a 20-minute drive to get to Marathon for groceries or anything beyond resort amenities, and delivery options are pretty limited. But if you’re looking to unplug and just exist in flip-flops for a few days, that isolation becomes part of the appeal. The staff has that laid-back Keys energy but they’re surprisingly efficient – check-in was smooth, housekeeping was thorough without being intrusive, and the concierge actually had useful suggestions beyond the obvious tourist spots.

It was a beautiful resort. Comfortable rooms and the view we had from the room was spectacular. We had a great time in the Coral Cay area since there weren’t many people. It’s a wonderful place to swim at the pool and do other fun activities like bike riding around the resort.

We stayed for our ten year anniversary. The staff were so nice, especially Karen. Since it was our anniversary, the staff surprised us with chocolate covered strawberries and a bottle of champagne. The lanai room was perfect. Loved having coffee on the lanai and laying out. The adult only pool was steps away and very peaceful. Wonderful views...

The location was perfect for us, between our two favorite spots of Islamorada and Marathon. The staff were all welcoming and thorough, especially Jhonae the pool server and bartender Jason at the Pilar Bar. We were able to drop our bags with bell services and relax by the pool until our room was ready, which was wonderful. There's an app that...
