Sheraton Carlsbad Resort & Spa

HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what struck me first about the Sheraton Carlsbad? It’s perched right on those bluffs overlooking the Pacific, which sounds amazing until you realize you’re actually pretty far from the actual beach action. I mean, you get gorgeous ocean views from most rooms – especially if you’re facing west – but you’ll need to walk down through the resort and cross the train tracks (yeah, there’s an active rail line) to get to the sand. The train thing isn’t as bad as it sounds, honestly. You hear it occasionally, but it’s more charming than annoying, sort of like a distant reminder that you’re in a real place, not some isolated resort bubble.

The property itself feels like classic Southern California resort vibes from maybe the early 2000s – which makes sense because that’s basically what it is. The lobby’s got that whole Spanish colonial thing going on with terra cotta tiles and warm woods, and the staff actually seems to know what they’re doing, which isn’t always a given at these bigger chain places. The spa is legitimately good (I tried the hot stone massage after a long day driving down from LA), and the fitness center is better equipped than most hotel gyms. What I really appreciated was the multiple pools – there’s the main lagoon-style one that gets packed with families during summer weekends, but there’s also a quieter adult pool tucked away near the spa building where you can actually relax. Pro tip: if you’re here between October and March, you’ll have the place mostly to yourself, and the rates drop significantly.

The location is honestly perfect if you want to explore North County without dealing with the chaos of downtown San Diego. You’re literally five minutes from the Flower Fields (if you’re here during bloom season in spring, absolutely go), and the Premium Outlets are right across the street if shopping’s your thing. Legoland is close enough that you can hear the screams of joy from the roller coasters on quiet evenings – which is either charming or mildly terrifying depending on your perspective. For dinner, skip the resort restaurants and walk ten minutes to the village area where you’ll find better food at half the price. The beach access is through South Carlsbad State Beach, which tends to be less crowded than the main Carlsbad beaches further north. Parking at the resort is valet only, which runs about $25 a night – kind of annoying but pretty standard for California coastal properties. Overall, it’s a solid choice if you want that resort feel with easy access to attractions, just don’t expect cutting-edge luxury or intimate boutique vibes.

$28 self parking fee per day is ridiculous, rooms are decent but nothing to write home about.
I was in town to visit Callaway Golf which is nearby and did not realize Legoland was literally right next door to hotel.
Advertised rate of $204 per night ended up costing $610 with taxes and fees.

Lego land does not worth the money and the hustle, but if you were still convinced to go there, the back entrance is great. Walking distance. There is also a great outlet nearby

The hotel lobby is beautiful and the bed was super comfortable. The king room was ample. The front desk staff was very polite and professional.
