HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what struck me first about Wild Dunes Resort? It’s actually two hotels in one – the Sweetgrass Inn and Boardwalk Inn – and honestly, that setup works better than you’d think. I mean, you get all the perks of a big resort (multiple pools, golf courses, the works) but with more intimate vibes depending on which building you’re in. The Boardwalk Inn feels more like a classic beach hotel, while Sweetgrass has this newer, slightly upscale thing going on. Both sit right on Isle of Palms, and I’m talking proper beachfront here – not one of those “beach adjacent” situations where you’re hiking half a mile to see sand.
The location is pretty sweet if you know the area. You’re on Palm Boulevard, which runs the length of the island, so getting around is straightforward. Sullivan’s Island is just a quick drive if you want to check out Fort Moultrie or grab dinner at somewhere like The Obstinate Daughter (seriously good pizza). The resort itself has that classic Lowcountry architecture – lots of pastels and wraparound porches that actually make sense in the humidity. What I really appreciated was how they handle the whole resort experience without feeling too… resort-y, if that makes sense. The pools don’t blast music, the beach access is easy without being crowded, and parking wasn’t the nightmare I expected during peak season.
Here’s the thing though – and this is coming from someone who’s stayed at plenty of Charleston-area places – Wild Dunes gets the balance right between having enough going on and not being overwhelming. The golf courses are legitimately nice (Harbor Course especially), but you’re not dodging golf carts every five minutes. The beach here tends to be less packed than Folly, and the water’s usually pretty calm since you’re on the more protected side of the island. Check-in was smooth, rooms were clean without being sterile, and honestly, waking up to those ocean views doesn’t get old. The 8.6 rating makes sense – it’s not trying to be the fanciest place on the coast, but it delivers on what matters. If you’re looking for that authentic Carolina coast experience without roughing it, and you want to be close enough to Charleston for day trips (about 30 minutes to downtown), this place hits the mark. Just book early if you’re coming in summer – locals know about this spot, and it shows.
