Honestly, the Gaylord Texan is one of those places that sounds almost too themed to be good until you actually walk through those massive glass doors. I mean, you’re driving down Gaylord Trail in Grapevine – which, if you don’t know the area, sits right between Dallas and Fort Worth – and suddenly there’s this enormous glass atrium rising up like some kind of Texas fever dream. The thing is genuinely impressive, even if you think you’re too cool for resort hotels.

What got me was how they actually pulled off the whole “everything’s bigger in Texas” concept without making it feel like a cheesy tourist trap. The atrium feels like you’re walking through a small town that just happens to be indoors, complete with a lazy river winding through it all. You know what’s wild? They change out the decorations seasonally, so if you hit it during their Christmas thing or the spring setup, it’s almost overwhelming in the best way. The lobby area gets pretty busy during convention season – and trust me, there’s always some massive conference happening – but the noise doesn’t really carry up to the rooms since everything’s so spread out.

The rooms themselves are solid for a four-star spot, though honestly, you’re not going to spend much time in them anyway. What I appreciated was that even the standard rooms feel spacious, and if you can swing it, try to get something overlooking the atrium rather than the parking lot side. The whole resort sits pretty close to DFW airport, which is actually convenient if you’re flying in, but you will hear planes occasionally. It’s not terrible, just something to know going in. The pool area is where this place really shines though – they’ve got this massive complex that feels more like a water park, and during summer it gets packed with families, but early morning or evening it’s actually pretty peaceful.

Parking’s free, which is clutch since you’re definitely going to want a car to explore Grapevine’s historic downtown (it’s like a ten-minute drive and totally worth it for dinner). The on-site restaurants are fine but pricey – I’d honestly recommend hitting up Main Street in Grapevine for better food and way better prices. Check-in can be a bit of a circus during peak times since they handle so many convention groups, but the staff generally keeps things moving. What surprised me most was how well they balance the business crowd with families – somehow it never feels like either group is in the other’s way. If you’re coming during spring or fall, definitely spend some time on the outdoor terraces; the Texas weather’s perfect and you get some solid views of the surrounding area. It’s not exactly luxury level, but for what it is – a big, fun resort that knows exactly what it’s trying to be – the Gaylord Texan delivers.
