Lajitas Golf Resort

100 Main Street, Terlingua, TX 79852, United States
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what caught me off guard about Lajitas Golf Resort? It’s actually way more civilized than you’d expect for being literally in the middle of nowhere West Texas. I mean, we’re talking about a place that’s closer to Big Bend National Park than any decent-sized town, but somehow they’ve managed to create this little oasis that doesn’t feel forced or touristy.
The resort sits right on the Rio Grande — and I’m talking you can hear the water from your room kind of close. The golf course is honestly impressive, especially considering they’re working with desert terrain that looks like it should be in a Western movie (which, fun fact, it has been). What really struck me was how they’ve embraced the whole borderland vibe without turning it into some cheesy theme park version. The architecture feels authentic, sort of Spanish colonial meets ranch house, and the staff actually knows the area’s history. They’ll tell you about the old trading post days and point out where Pancho Villa supposedly watered his horses — whether that’s true or not, it adds to the atmosphere.
Here’s the thing though — this isn’t your typical resort experience, and that’s exactly why it works. The nearest Starbucks is probably three hours away, but the restaurant here does surprisingly good Tex-Mex and steaks. The rooms are comfortable (decent AC, which matters more than you’d think out here), and most have those big windows that frame the desert landscape perfectly. Honestly, the sunsets alone justify the trip. I stayed in March and the weather was perfect, but I’d imagine summers are pretty brutal — though that’s when you’d appreciate the pool most. The spa treatments incorporate local elements like desert sage, which sounds gimmicky but actually felt pretty great after a day of hiking.
What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. Like, genuinely quiet in a way that city people forget exists. You’ll hear coyotes sometimes, which is either exciting or unsettling depending on your perspective. The golf course is the main draw for a lot of folks, but even if you don’t play, it’s worth walking around just for the views. They’ve got a little general store that sells everything from forgotten sunscreen to local artwork, and the prices aren’t completely ridiculous for being in the middle of nowhere. Check-in was smooth, parking is obviously not an issue, and they’re pretty good about helping you plan day trips to Big Bend or the ghost town areas nearby. Just remember — cell service is spotty, the nearest grocery store is in Alpine (about an hour), and this is definitely more about disconnecting than staying plugged in. If you’re looking for nightlife or shopping, you’re in the wrong place. But if you want to golf in one of the most dramatic settings in Texas, stargaze without light pollution, and actually experience what this part of the country feels like, Lajitas delivers in a way that feels genuine rather than manufactured.

Based on Google Maps images, I was a bit afraid that the hotel would be outdated. But there was nothing to be afraid about. This hotel has exceeded all expectations. Check-in was smooth and staff was very friendly and helpful. Room was very spacious with a comfortable bed. We loved the "Old West" vibe in the hotel. Due to the proximity of Big Bend...

Very comfortable bed. Good water pressure in the shower. All staff interaction was great. Food was good at the restaurant. We went on the 5 mile trail ride and enjoyed it very much. Even though it was 110° they had everything you needed to be comfortable and enjoy your stay at this resort.
