Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of resorts over the years, but Oglebay actually surprised me – and honestly, I wasn’t expecting much from Wheeling, West Virginia. The place sits on this massive 1,700-acre property that feels more like a small town than a hotel. When you pull up Lodge Drive, you’re immediately hit by how green everything is (the grounds crew here doesn’t mess around), and there’s this old-school charm that somehow doesn’t feel stuffy or outdated.

What really got me was the variety of stuff you can do without ever leaving the property. I mean, they’ve got their own zoo – a legitimate zoo with actual animals, not some sad petting farm situation. The golf courses are well-maintained, though the Wilson course can get pretty crowded on weekends if you’re not careful about tee times. The spa’s solid too, nothing revolutionary but they know what they’re doing with massages. You know what though? The real gem is the outdoor activities, especially if you’re there during fall when the Ohio Valley starts showing off with the colors. The hiking trails connect to Good Zoo and wind through some genuinely beautiful terrain that makes you forget you’re basically in industrial Appalachia.

The rooms themselves are comfortable – think upscale lodge vibes rather than fancy city hotel. Mine had this view of the lake that was particularly nice in the morning with coffee, though I’ll be honest, the Wi-Fi can be spotty depending on which building you’re in. Check-in was smooth, parking’s never an issue (thank god), and the staff actually seems to enjoy working there, which you notice more than you’d think. The restaurant scene is better than expected too – Ihlenfeld Dining Room does this Sunday brunch that locals drive in for, so definitely make reservations if that’s your thing. Winter’s when this place really shines though, because they transform into this whole Festival of Lights situation that’s been going on for decades. I’m talking drive-through light displays that cover the entire property, ice skating, the works. It gets busy – like, really busy – but there’s something genuinely magical about it that doesn’t feel commercial or forced. Even if you’re not staying overnight, people come from Pennsylvania and Ohio just for the holiday experience. That 8.4 rating makes sense when you factor in everything you’re getting for the price point, especially compared to what you’d pay for similar amenities in bigger cities.
