Lakesong Resort

Ammankari Road, 686563 Kumarakom, India
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, Lakesong Resort is one of those places where you kind of understand why people get obsessed with Kerala’s backwaters. I mean, the name pretty much tells you everything – you’re literally falling asleep to water lapping against traditional houseboats and waking up to some serious bird action (bring earplugs if you’re not into the 5 AM nature symphony, though most people find it charming after the first night).
The location on Ammankari Road puts you right in the thick of Kumarakom’s canal network, which honestly beats staying in the more touristy spots closer to the main village. You’re still only about ten minutes by auto-rickshaw from the bird sanctuary, but it feels way more secluded. The resort actually sits on this little peninsula thing, so you’ve got water views from most rooms – and I’m talking proper backwater views, not just a glimpse through the palm trees. Check-in was surprisingly smooth for a place that feels this remote, and they’ve got decent parking if you’re driving (though honestly, most people fly into Cochin and take the hour-long transfer they arrange).
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to keep that five-star polish without losing the whole Kerala vibe. The rooms are spacious – like, you can actually unpack your entire suitcase spacious – and the AC works properly, which you’ll appreciate since even in winter it gets pretty humid. The pool area is where most people end up hanging out in the afternoons, and it’s positioned so you’re basically swimming with a backwater panorama. Food’s solid too, especially if you let them know you want the local fish preparations – their karimeen is honestly better than what I’ve had at some specialty places in Kochi. The spa’s worth mentioning if you’re into that sort of thing, and they do this Ayurvedic consultation that’s actually legitimate, not just tourist theater.
You know what though? The 7.9 rating makes sense when you consider this isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea. Service can be a bit slow during peak season (December through February gets pretty packed), and if you’re expecting Vegas-level entertainment, you’ll be disappointed. This is more about disconnecting and soaking up the whole tranquil backwater thing. The WiFi works fine in common areas but can be spotty in some rooms – which honestly might be a feature, not a bug, depending on why you’re here. Evening boat rides through the canals are included, and that’s when the place really shines. There’s something about drifting through those narrow waterways at sunset, watching local fishermen and kids playing on the banks, that makes you forget about whatever stressed you out enough to book this trip in the first place.

Food was fantastic at breakfast, lunch and dinner; great buffets with a range of indian/western food that worked for kids and adults. The view of the lake, the pool and the grounds were also lovely and the free canoe was fun to try. Staff were helpful.
