I mean, you’re right there in the thick of things, but the property itself has this surprisingly serene vibe that I wasn’t expecting from a place so centrally located.
The building itself has that colonial-era charm that Ooty does so well – you can tell ITC put some serious thought into maintaining the hill station character while actually making everything work properly (which, honestly, isn’t always a given up here). What really struck me was how quiet it gets in the evenings, even though you’re basically in the heart of town. The staff seemed to genuinely know the area well too – not just the standard tourist script, but actual useful stuff like which local tea estates are worth visiting and when the morning mist usually clears up for better views. The rooms face different directions, and if you can swing it, try to get one overlooking the garden side rather than the road – there’s still some early morning traffic noise from delivery trucks, though nothing too crazy.
Here’s the thing about staying here that I think people don’t realize until they’re actually walking around Ooty – being on Selbourne Road means you’re within easy walking distance of the Botanical Gardens, the lake area, and all those little local eateries that aren’t in the guidebooks, but you’re also positioned perfectly for day trips to places like Coonoor or Kotagiri without having to navigate through the main commercial strip every time you want to go somewhere. The property has decent parking too, which matters more than you’d think when you’re dealing with Ooty’s winding roads and limited street parking. I will say the check-in process was smoother than I expected – they actually had our room ready early, and someone took the time to explain the local weather patterns and suggest timing for various activities. The whole experience felt more like staying somewhere that understands how travelers actually move through this area, rather than just dropping you into a generic luxury box that could be anywhere.
