I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to GReaT trails Kodaikanal – the name’s a bit odd with that random capitalization, honestly – but this place actually surprised me in the best way. It sits right in Bharathi Nagar, which is perfect because you’re close enough to the main Kodai action but far enough from the crowds that descend on the lake area during peak season. The property itself has that classic hill station feel without trying too hard, if that makes sense. Five stars might sound fancy, but it’s more like comfortable luxury rather than stuffy elegance.

What really got me was how they’ve managed to capture that authentic Kodaikanal vibe while still giving you all the modern stuff you actually need. The rooms are spacious – I mean, genuinely spacious, not just “spacious for India” – and the views are incredible if you get one of the units facing the valley. You can actually hear the silence up here, which sounds weird but you’ll know what I mean when you experience it. The staff genuinely seems to know the area well, not just the tourist spots everyone hits. They pointed me toward this little spice garden walk that I never would’ve found otherwise, and honestly, it was better than half the “must-see” attractions everyone talks about. The restaurant food is solid too – they do both local Tamil dishes and the usual Continental stuff, though I’d definitely recommend trying their take on traditional Kodai vegetables if you’re feeling adventurous.

Here’s the thing though – Kodaikanal gets absolutely packed during the summer months and around Diwali, so if you’re planning to stay here during those times, book way ahead and expect the roads leading up to be a bit of a nightmare. But during the shoulder seasons? This place is honestly perfect. The 8.5 rating makes sense to me because while it’s not flawless (the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, and the hot water takes a minute to kick in), it delivers on what matters most: comfort, location, and that feeling like you’re actually experiencing the hills rather than just staying in some generic hotel that happens to be in the mountains. Plus, parking is actually decent here, which – trust me – is not something you can take for granted in Kodai.
