The Chumbi Mountain Retreat & Spa

Naku Chumbong, Pemayangtse, 737111 Pelling, India
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, when I first pulled up to The Chumbi Mountain Retreat & Spa in Pelling, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the road to Naku Chumbong is one of those winding Himalayan routes that makes you wonder if your GPS has completely lost its mind. But then you arrive, and suddenly all that serpentine driving makes perfect sense. This place sits perched at just the right spot where you can actually see Kanchenjunga on clear mornings, which in Sikkim means you’ve hit the geographical jackpot.
The thing about this retreat is that it feels like someone took the concept of a luxury hotel and then asked, “okay, but what if we actually put it somewhere that matters?” You know what I mean? Instead of some generic hillside, they’ve positioned it where you’re genuinely in the mountains – you can hear the wind through the rhododendrons at night, and there’s this particular quiet that only happens when you’re properly away from everything. The spa treatments here use local herbs that the staff actually knows about (not just generic “mountain botanicals” like some places), and I watched them preparing oil blends with ingredients they’d collected from around the property. The rooms are solid without being flashy – good beds, reliable hot water, and those floor-to-ceiling windows that make you want to skip dinner just to watch the light change on the peaks.
What really got me was how the staff handled the whole experience. Check-in was refreshingly straightforward, and they seemed to understand that people come here to disconnect, not to be constantly entertained. The restaurant serves this excellent mix of Sikkimese and Tibetan food alongside the usual suspects, and their local beer selection actually includes some Gangtok breweries I’d never heard of. Parking isn’t an issue – they’ve got a proper lot, which matters more than you’d think when you’re navigating mountain roads with a rental car. The only thing that might catch you off guard is how quiet it gets after sunset; if you’re someone who needs background noise to sleep, pack accordingly. But honestly, that silence is half the point. This isn’t the kind of place where you’ll find organized activities or a bustling lobby scene – it’s for people who want to wake up to mountain views, spend their days exploring Pemayangtse Monastery (which is literally a short walk down the hill), and end up back on their private balcony with a cup of tea, feeling like they’ve found something genuinely special rather than just another hotel room with a view.

Ravinder from India
I was particularly impressed with the staff and their willingness to go out of their way to look after our comfort. The room given had very good view. The best thing about the hotel is its location and view that it offers plus the staff . Particularly impressed with Mr Ashish who made sure that food was taken care of pretty well.
