When you first walk up from Light House Road (and yeah, you’ll actually hear the waves before you see the hotel), it feels like stumbling onto one of those family-run spots that hasn’t been completely swallowed up by the tourism machine yet.

The thing about staying here is that you’re literally a two-minute walk from the main Lighthouse Beach stretch, but you’re just far enough off the main drag that you won’t have vendors knocking on your door at sunrise. I mean, the location is honestly pretty sweet – you can grab your morning chai from the little stall right outside, then wander down to watch the fishermen bring in their catch before the beach gets crowded with tourists. The rooms themselves are… well, they’re clean and functional, though don’t expect anything fancy. The AC works (crucial during those humid Kerala nights), and honestly, you’ll probably spend most of your time on the small balcony anyway, especially if you snag one of the upper floors with partial sea views.

What I actually love about Soma Palmshore is how it feels like staying in someone’s slightly oversized beach house rather than a proper hotel. The staff genuinely remembers your name after day one, and they’ll give you the real scoop on things – like which ayurvedic centers are worth your time versus the tourist traps, or when the local temple festivals are happening. You know what really sold me though? During my last stay, the power went out (happens sometimes in Kovalam, especially during monsoon season), and instead of everyone just sitting around complaining, the whole place turned into this impromptu gathering with candles and stories. Sure, the 6.6 rating probably reflects some of the rough edges – the WiFi can be spotty, and the hot water sometimes takes a while to kick in – but there’s an authenticity here that you just don’t get at those sterile resort complexes up the coast. Plus, you’re within walking distance of both the German Bakery (trust me on the banana pancakes) and that little seafood spot near the rocks where locals actually eat. If you’re looking for pristine luxury, keep scrolling, but if you want to feel like you’re actually experiencing Kovalam rather than just visiting it, this place hits that sweet spot.
