Takanawa Hanakohro – in Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa

108-8612 Tokyo-to, Minatoku 3-13-1, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of fancy hotels in Tokyo, but Takanawa Hanakohro actually caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. It’s tucked inside the Grand Prince Hotel Takanawa complex, which honestly sounds a bit confusing at first, but once you’re there it makes perfect sense. You’re getting this intimate ryokan experience within a larger hotel property, so you have access to all the facilities but with this incredibly personalized service that feels more like staying at someone’s beautifully appointed home.
The location is what really sold me though. You’re in Minato-ku, which means you can walk to Shinagawa Station in about ten minutes – seriously convenient if you’re doing day trips or heading to the airports. But here’s what the guidebooks don’t tell you: the hotel sits right next to these gorgeous traditional gardens that most tourists completely miss. I’d wake up early (jet lag, you know how it is) and walk through Takanawa Park before the city got busy. There’s something almost surreal about having that kind of green space so close to the urban chaos. The noise level is surprisingly manageable too, considering you’re still very much in the city.
What really sets this place apart is how they’ve managed to blend traditional Japanese hospitality with modern comfort without making it feel forced or touristy. The staff genuinely seems to anticipate what you need – I’m talking about small things like having hot tea waiting when you return from a long day, or knowing exactly how you like your room temperature set. The 9.4 rating isn’t just numbers on a screen; you feel it in every interaction. Check-in was seamless, but more importantly, they actually listened when I mentioned I was celebrating an anniversary and made these thoughtful little touches throughout our stay. The rooms have this perfect balance of traditional elements and contemporary amenities – tatami mats that don’t make your back ache, for instance, and bathrooms that feel like personal spas. Honestly, I’ve stayed at places that cost twice as much and didn’t come close to this level of attention to detail. If you’re looking for that authentic Japanese hospitality experience but don’t want to sacrifice comfort or convenience, this is exactly what you want. Just book early – word is getting out about this place.

Absolutely loved this place. The staff was incredibly kind, breakfast was great, and the beds were so comfy.
What could be improved: Light is a little bright and restroom is a little far from the bed, but this room was huge!! So honestly, it was still really comfy. It is a little farther from everything; however, close to the Shinagawa station.

Super clean and friendly staff. Breakfast has lots of variety. 5 min walking to the station.
What could be improved: The view is not that great, only can see roof of the other building. Room is bit old but maintained well.
