Kizashi The Suite 京都祇園

605-0073 Kyoto, Kyoto, Higashiyama-ku Gion-machi Kitagawa 275, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what hits you first about Kizashi The Suite? It’s tucked away on this tiny street in Gion where you can actually hear the wooden geta sandals clicking on the cobblestones – I mean, you’re literally in the heart of where geishas still walk to their appointments. The building itself is this gorgeous traditional machiya that someone clearly spent serious money restoring, but they didn’t go overboard trying to make it look brand new. There’s still that authentic feel when you slide open the entrance door, though honestly, calling it a “hotel” feels weird since it’s more like staying in someone’s incredibly tasteful private residence.
The suites are pretty incredible – I stayed in one of the larger ones and the tatami floors had this perfect slight give under your feet, plus they’ve got these deep soaking tubs that overlook a tiny internal garden. What really got me though was waking up around 6 AM (jet lag, you know how it is) and hearing the morning rituals from Kennin-ji temple just a few blocks away. The staff is small but they actually know your name after day one, and the woman at the front desk gave me this insider tip about the best time to visit the bamboo groves in Arashiyama – she was completely right about beating the crowds. The rooms have all the modern stuff you’d expect from a five-star place, but it’s integrated so thoughtfully that you barely notice the air conditioning or the heated toilet seats until you’re using them.
Here’s the thing though – this isn’t one of those places where you’re isolated from real Kyoto life. You’re maybe a three-minute walk from Hanami-koji street where all the restaurants are, but you’re far enough down the side streets that you’re not dealing with the tourist crowds taking selfies at all hours. I watched actual geishas heading to work from my window, and there’s this little convenience store around the corner that locals use – nothing fancy, just real neighborhood life happening around you. The area gets pretty quiet after 9 PM, which is perfect if you want to sleep, but you might find it a bit too sleepy if you’re looking for nightlife. Parking is nonexistent, but honestly, you don’t need a car here anyway – the closest subway is Gion-Shijo, maybe a ten-minute walk. The price point is definitely up there, but when you factor in the location and the fact that you’re basically living in a piece of Kyoto history, it makes sense. I’d definitely come back, especially during cherry blossom season – I bet the view from those garden-facing rooms would be absolutely stunning.

Loved the suite, large apartment with great wooden bath. Fab location.

We initially were hesitant to book due to the mixed reviews but are SO happy we did! The location could not be better, you are literally on the Main Street in Gion with so much on your door step. The room was massive, the bed was so comfy, the tower and tub were great. There are lots of toiletries included in the room and a complimentary fridge...

Heidi from Australia (16 January 2025)
The location was amazing! We had ample space in our 100sqm room with a mix of traditional and western bedding for our family with teenage children. We had a room with a wooden Japanese bath and after a huge walking day, nothing was better than getting into the wooden bath to soak. What could be improved: If I had to pick one thing, it would be...
