HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what caught me off guard about the Sheraton Sunmarina? It’s actually built right into this dramatic cliff face in Onna – I mean, you’re literally looking down at the ocean from your room, and it feels like you’re on some kind of luxury ship that’s permanently docked against the rocks. The whole property has this split-level thing going on where the lobby’s up top, but then everything cascades down toward the water. First time I stayed there, I got completely turned around trying to find the beach access because there are all these winding paths and elevators that feel like they’re taking you into the earth itself.
The location is honestly perfect if you want that resort bubble experience but still be able to explore the real Okinawa. You’re right on Route 58 – the main drag that runs up the west coast – so getting to places like the Churaumi Aquarium is pretty straightforward, maybe 45 minutes if traffic’s decent. But here’s the thing locals don’t always mention: that whole stretch of Onna gets absolutely packed during Golden Week and summer holidays. I’ve seen traffic backed up for miles with families trying to get to the beaches. The hotel’s got its own little cove though, so you can just ignore all that chaos and hang out on their private beach. The water there is this incredible turquoise that looks almost artificial in photos, but it’s the real deal.
What really sold me on this place was the breakfast setup – they do this whole Okinawan spread alongside the typical international stuff, and honestly, starting your morning with fresh goya champuru while looking out at the East China Sea just hits different. The staff tends to remember your coffee order after a couple days, which is a nice touch. I will say the rooms themselves are… well, they’re showing their age a bit. It’s a 5-star property and the 8.1 rating feels about right – everything works, it’s clean, the beds are comfortable, but don’t expect cutting-edge design or anything. The real draw is stepping out onto your balcony at sunset and watching the light change over the water. During whale season (January through March), you can sometimes spot humpbacks from the upper floors, though you’ll want binoculars. The pool area gets pretty lively with families during the day, but after about 7 PM it’s usually just couples and the occasional night swimmer. If you’re looking for that quintessential Okinawa beach resort experience without having to venture too far from your room, this place delivers exactly what you’d expect – maybe not the most innovative or Instagram-worthy spot on the island, but solid, reliable, and genuinely relaxing once you settle in.
