Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort

HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what struck me first about the Sheraton Grande Ocean Resort? It’s actually perched right on this gorgeous stretch of coastline in Miyazaki where you can hear the waves from your room – and I mean really hear them, not just catch a glimpse of water if you crane your neck. The whole place sits on Hamayama beach, which honestly feels like having a private slice of the Pacific since most international tourists haven’t discovered this part of Kyushu yet.

The resort itself is one of those rare five-star places that doesn’t feel stuffy or try-hard. Walking through the lobby, there’s this perfect balance of Japanese elegance and beach resort vibes – lots of natural wood and stone, but also these massive windows that frame the ocean views beautifully. I actually spent way too much time just sitting in the lobby area with coffee, watching the surfers out on the waves (Miyazaki’s surf scene is seriously underrated, by the way). The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, and if you can swing an ocean-facing room, do it – waking up to that sunrise over the Pacific is worth the extra cost. The beds are those perfect not-too-soft, not-too-firm situations, and the bathrooms have both Western-style tubs and separate shower areas, which is clutch after a long day exploring.

What really sets this place apart though is how it connects you to the area without isolating you from it. The resort’s restaurants serve incredible local Miyazaki beef – I mean, this is the prefecture famous for wagyu – but you’re also just a short walk or taxi ride from local izakayas and the kind of family-run places where you’ll get the real taste of coastal Miyazaki. The staff actually gave me solid recommendations for hiking spots in the nearby mountains (the views back toward the coast are incredible) and knew which beaches were best for different activities. Parking is free and easy, which matters if you’re planning to explore – and you should, because Miyazaki city center is only about 20 minutes away, and there are these amazing coastal drives heading south toward Nichinan. The only minor downside is that it can get pretty busy with domestic tourists during Japanese holidays, but honestly, that just adds to the authentic experience. At 8.5 out of 10, it’s the kind of place that makes you want to extend your stay and maybe rethink your entire Japan itinerary to spend more time on this coast.

Very spacious room with nice bath and separate toilet.

What could be improved: The bed frames seem to be a bit out of shape and do not support body weight well.

Large area attached to hotel

What could be improved: Food options very expensive!
Restaurants in hotel would have cost more for dinner for a family of 3 than the room did

Great ocean sea view from the room, friendly staff, many restaurant choices in the resort, we went for a Teppanyaki restaurant and it was great.

What could be improved: It is a very old resort hotel and they didn’t do much renovation. The room was quite outdated.

Amazing hotel, nice rooms, beautiful aesthetics, great pool, stayed for over a week

What could be improved: Some of the staff (cleaning staff, girls in the coffee shop, bell boys, shop staff, pool staff, onsen staff) were amazing, friendly and went over and above to help. Other staff (one security guy who shouted at me in English even though I’m fluent in Japanese and replied back to me in English despite this) for going into the pool at 8 pm - even tho the night before night swimming was allowed until 9pm and there were no signs or info in English saying not to… (the season had changed thus changed times but how was I to know?). Many of the reception staff aren’t great, hesitant and not forthcoming — except a few competent ppl who tend to be on late when they are really needed at busier times. The maitre d didn’t sit us down at the central hotel cocktail bar saying there were no tables without checking, then let a party of 4 older Japanese who hadn’t booked have a table. There’s hardly any info in English. I felt like I was about to be told off by earnest jobs worth staff (for example, asking me to prepay for breakfast or sign for my room number, when I had already done that, he didn’t believe me and checked, then apologised for having got it all wrong - lack of communication w other staff no doubt). Despite staying there for two weeks and using all the facilities I.e.being one of their best customers, we only received great service from the genuinely nice people and were treated w suspicion or rudeness by people who thought they were above us. I guess it’s because Miyazaki is a local place so it’s difficult to get staff and they think they are better than everyone else because they are working in a nice environment. However this type of behaviour to long stay paying guests - treating them with suspicion and even yelling at them (in the case of the security guard) would be intolerable in Tokyo or any other major city. The Italian restaurant closed at 7 pm one night due to lack of ingredients because of the typhoon - so change the menu then, or let people know in advance.
