Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know that moment when you pull up to a place and immediately think “okay, this is going to be different”? That’s exactly what happened when I first saw Higashiyama Niseko Village tucked into the Hokkaido mountainside. The Ritz-Carlton Reserve isn’t your typical ski resort hotel – it’s actually built to feel more like a modern Japanese village that just happens to have incredible service and those mountain views that make you stop mid-conversation.
What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to blend that unmistakable Ritz-Carlton attention to detail with genuine Japanese hospitality, without making it feel forced or theme-park-ish. The staff here – honestly, they remember your name after one interaction, and I mean the housekeeping staff too, not just the front desk. The onsen (hot springs) are the real deal, by the way, with mineral-rich water sourced right from the area, and there’s something almost meditative about soaking there after a day on Niseko’s famously deep powder. Speaking of the skiing – you’re literally minutes from some of Japan’s best runs, and the hotel’s location in the Soga area means you’re close enough to the action but far enough away that you don’t hear snowboards clattering around at 6 AM.
The rooms themselves feel like sophisticated mountain retreats, with those floor-to-ceiling windows that frame Mount Yotei perfectly (locals call it Ezo Fuji, and once you see it, you’ll understand why). I mean, waking up to that view never gets old, especially when there’s fresh snow. The restaurant situation is impressive too – they’ve got this kaiseki-style dining that uses incredibly fresh Hokkaido ingredients, and the sake selection… well, let’s just say I learned more about Japanese rice wine in three days than I had in years. During peak season (December through February), the place does get busy, but somehow it never feels crowded or rushed. Check-in was smooth even when I arrived during Golden Week – they’ve got this process down to an art form. The only minor thing I’d mention is that if you’re planning to explore Niseko town itself, you’ll want to factor in about 15 minutes by car, though honestly, once you’re settled in here, you might not want to leave anyway.

Everything was great, the room the bed the bath the food the service the staff, everything. Except for one thing. The chair. I must’ve banged my feet and ankles on the chair in my room 100 times. The chairs legs are made of a substance harder than anything else known to man. Hurt my leg so many times. Who picked the furniture?

Breakfast was excellent, with western and Japanese options. Service overall was kind and efficient. The location cannot be beat as the lift is seconds from the property and the village is about a 5 minute walk from the hotel. What could be improved: Though the food in the restaurants was very good, the room service food was only middling at...
