HOTEL OVERVIEW

Nestled in the scenic mountains of Hakone, the exquisite 5-star Hakone Honbako (箱根本箱) offers guests an unparalleled luxury retreat in one of Japan’s most beloved hot spring destinations. With an exceptional guest rating of 9.4, this highly acclaimed establishment stands as a testament to Japanese hospitality excellence, consistently delighting visitors with its impeccable service and attention to detail. Located at Gora 1320-491 in Hakone, Kanagawa Prefecture, the hotel enjoys a privileged position in the Gora district, an area renowned for its stunning natural beauty, therapeutic onsen (hot springs), and proximity to Mount Fuji views. The name “Honbako,” meaning “treasure box” in Japanese, perfectly encapsulates the precious experiences that await guests at this hidden gem in the mountains just 90 minutes from Tokyo. The Hakone Honbako seamlessly blends traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern luxury, creating an atmosphere of refined tranquility that has earned it its near-perfect rating. Situated in Gora, guests benefit from easy access to the Hakone Tozan Railway, the picturesque mountain train that winds through the valleys, as well as the Hakone Open-Air Museum with its impressive collection of sculptures and art installations set against the backdrop of magnificent mountain scenery. The hotel’s strategic location also places visitors within reach of Lake Ashi, where iconic pirate ships cruise across waters that reflect Mount Fuji on clear days, and the sulfurous valleys of Owakudani, known for their “black eggs” cooked in volcanic waters that are said to add seven years to one’s life. After days spent exploring these natural and cultural wonders, guests return to the sanctuary of Hakone Honbako, where they can soak in revitalizing hot spring baths, the centuries-old tradition that has made Hakone famous throughout Japan. What truly distinguishes Hakone Honbako, beyond its prime location and luxurious accommodations, is its commitment to providing an authentic Japanese experience infused with contemporary comfort. The remarkable 9.4 rating speaks volumes about the hotel’s success in creating memorable stays for its guests, with many visitors highlighting the immaculate facilities, exceptional dining options featuring seasonal Kanagawa specialties, and the warm, anticipatory service that defines Japanese omotenashi hospitality. Whether you’re seeking a romantic getaway, a cultural exploration, or simply a peaceful retreat surrounded by nature, Hakone Honbako offers a quintessential Japanese ryokan experience elevated to five-star standards. As the changing seasons transform the landscape—from spring cherry blossoms to summer greenery, autumn foliage, and winter snow—Hakone Honbako stands ready to welcome guests into its “treasure box” of experiences, promising memories that will last long after returning home from the misty mountains of Hakone.

Everything was beautifully presented, the dinner was definitely a highlight, and the views, quiet surroundings, and absolutely delightful library was top notch. I could have spent many more days reading and soaking in the serenity! The thoughtfulness of the dinner and breakfast, we were provided the story of each dish, made it greatly more enjoyable.

What could be improved: To be honest, we had all our expectations met and exceeded! It was our first real ryokan experience, and it certainly set a high bar.

The food was amazing!
Breakfast Japanese style, the presentation was perfect.
Dinner was also very sophisticated : a lot of thinking to develop a menu that makes sense. We were almost the only europeans and the waiters and cooks made the effort to translate everything and made us feel included and welcome.
The drink pairing was also very carefully selected.
The Onsen was very cool, and we had our own little bath on the terrasse of the room.

What could be improved: Just a little more shelves/coat hooks in the room would be good to empty the bags (we were travelling with big suitcases as it was a stop during a long trip and were struggling).

The design is unique and comfortable. We really enjoyed the meals and found the staff to be very welcoming. The private tub was a cute fixture and the public bath was a must do experience.

Second time staying at this property and whilst I thought my first stay was fantastic my experience was further enhanced by the English competency of the staff present this time around which meant for no misunderstandings. The facilities are great for onsen with indoor and outdoor facilities, as well as cypress hot tub in the bedroom. Above all the food is Michelin worthy multi course for dinner and breakfast with various wine and non alcoholic pairings. Its modern interpretation of Japanese traditional cuisine from the region, locally sourced really imaginative. Really fantastic stay again and would visit when next on business in Tokyo.

The breakfast and dinner were incredible, and the staff were so friendly and accommodation, making the extra effort to explain all the courses and their origins to me in English. Super relaxing, very quiet and peaceful.

What could be improved: I was confused about the arrival snacks and if that was what was laid out or if we were supposed to go in to ask? But that’s really a negligible issue
