HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what struck me first about the Kawana Hotel? It’s this classic Japanese resort that somehow manages to feel both grand and welcoming at the same time. Perched right on the Izu Peninsula coastline in Ito, it’s got this old-school elegance that reminds you why Japanese hospitality has such a reputation. The lobby has these huge windows overlooking Sagami Bay, and honestly, I spent way too much time just sitting there with coffee watching the waves crash against the rocks below.

The location is actually pretty brilliant if you know the area. You’re about a 40-minute train ride from Atami (which connects easily to Tokyo), but it feels worlds away from the city chaos. The hotel sits right next to the Kawana Golf Course – I mean, literally right there – so if you’re into golf, you’ve basically hit the jackpot. But even if you’re not, the grounds are gorgeous for walking around. There’s this coastal walking path that locals use for their morning jogs, and you can follow it for miles along the cliffs. The Jogasaki Coast is just down the road too, with those dramatic basalt formations that look like something out of a postcard.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to anticipate things without being intrusive. The onsen (hot spring baths) are the real highlight though – there’s an outdoor one where you can soak while watching the sunset over the Pacific. It gets pretty busy around 6 PM when the tour groups show up, but if you go earlier in the afternoon or later in the evening, you’ll often have it mostly to yourself. The rooms are that perfect blend of traditional Japanese elements with modern comfort – tatami mats, but also proper beds and excellent air conditioning (trust me, you’ll want that in summer). I will say the WiFi can be a bit spotty in some of the rooms facing the ocean, probably something to do with the building’s construction, but honestly, isn’t that kind of the point of being here? The restaurant does this incredible kaiseki dinner that changes with the seasons, and their breakfast spread is extensive enough that you’ll probably skip lunch. Just heads up – parking is free, which is nice, but the lot fills up fast during cherry blossom season and autumn when the nearby mountains are changing colors.

Location and surroundings, very nice onsen (hot springs) and spa treatments, nice food.

What could be improved: Very old dated rooms and hotel in general. Not in balance with the price, it defiantly needs renovation.

The hotel is a classic Japanese hotel currently celebrating its 85th anniversary. It's a beautiful old hotel with spectacular views of the sea, surrounded by two large golf courses. Our room was clean and on the top (5th) floor, with a king size bed facing the water. That alone was worth the trip.

What could be improved: It's an expensive stay, inasmuch as while the room price was reasonable, the fact that it is quite isolated (a relatively long taxi or car only from the nearest train station) and the onsite food is extremely expensive, it's easy to feel a bit trapped there. Unless money is no object you'll want to taxi into town for all your meals, even breakfast.
Neither of us are golfers so the golf courses held no interest.
The interior of the building (at least the common areas and our room) were kept in good condition, but the exterior of the building and the grounds are clearly not being maintained to their prior standard. The large glass doors that used to be the grand entrance facing the sea have rusted shut so one is forced to use a smaller side-door, and the stone steps up to the doors are being left to crumble. If the architect were still alive I'm sure he'd be devastated. What used to be a Japanese garden has gone wild and the pond filled with weeds. The park next to that has been turned into a golf green, which is clearly lower maintenance but has lost most of its beauty. This seems a real shame, and I'd guess that the hotel is having a difficult time financially so this is understandable, but part of the charm of the hotel is its prior opulence, which is fading now.
Finally, the front desk staff were rather snooty and clearly have a Showa-era attitude about their jobs, as if the customer weren't quite good enough for the hotel. I suppose if we'd showed up in a suit-and-tie and a fancy dress things might have been different... maybe I should've flashed a Rolex or some obvious wealth indicators. Polite but no more than that.

What could be improved: You can no longer get the Japan Times. Kids room is now closed. They need to do a little more for children.

Only stayed there because we were playing at the Kawana Fuji golf course. Convenient access to the golf course

What could be improved: A bit dated. They could do with a refurbishment

What could be improved: Time stoped in 90’.
Hotel should be totally refresh.

surrounding and scenery with gold and ses view are stunning. What could be improved: basically no greetings nor real service from check in to check out , the maintenance of the property is apparently an issue , from entrance with spider webs and cracks to lobby itself , a shame as the property as a great history and could be truly a luxury hotel...

グレードアップ料金を支払い海側の部屋にして正解でした。部屋も高級感あり 落ち着いて快適に過ごしました。お風呂も高級感あり 快適でした。

What could be improved: チェックインの対応した者が失礼な感じで残念。 チェックイン前に渡された紙が探してたら さっき渡しましたよね とキツく言われ びっくり。喫茶室でケーキセットを食してた時で 慣れてない若い女の子だった、そばにいた年配のホテルの人が なくても大丈夫です と案内してくれた。 海外と国内のホテル1100軒以上(100回以上) ホテル側の方は きちんと教育して欲しい。 本当に驚いた。
