HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Highland Resort Hotel & Spa – I mean, Fujiyoshida isn’t exactly where you’d picture a spa getaway, right? But this place completely changed my perspective on the whole area. It sits tucked away on Shinnishihara, and what struck me immediately was how quiet everything felt despite being so close to the Fuji-Subaru Line. You know that feeling when you step out of your car and the air just hits different? That’s this place – crisp mountain air with this faint smell of cedar that follows you everywhere.

The resort actually makes perfect sense once you realize what they’re going for here. Instead of trying to compete with those massive luxury chains closer to Tokyo, Highland Resort leans into being your base camp for Fuji adventures while still giving you that pampered feeling at the end of the day. The spa is honestly the star – I spent way too much time in their onsen area, watching the mist roll across the mountains through these huge windows. The staff clearly knows their clientele too; they’re used to dealing with hikers who show up looking like they’ve been through a washing machine, but they treat everyone like royalty. Check-in was refreshingly smooth, and they actually store hiking gear if you need them to.

What really sold me on this place was the little stuff that shows they get it. The restaurant serves this incredible local trout (probably the best I’ve had in Japan), and they’ll pack you trail lunches that are actually good – not just convenience store onigiri. Parking is free, which might sound obvious but trust me, it’s not always a given around here. The rooms are that perfect blend of modern comfort and traditional touches, though I’ll be honest, the walls could be a bit thicker – you might hear your neighbors if they’re early risers gearing up for a dawn hike. But honestly? The 8.9 rating makes total sense. It’s one of those places where everything just works, the staff genuinely cares, and you leave feeling like you discovered something special that most tourists completely miss. If you’re planning to tackle Fuji or just want to decompress somewhere that feels a million miles from city chaos, this is your spot.

Very nice hotel we stayed at a renovated room on a higher level. Very cool to look over the park. There is free parking available. Entrance to the park is free for hotel guests but you have to pay per ride or buy a day pass for 6000 yen. Onsen was also very nice. Very nice view from the breakfast hall but if it’s raining you will not see mt Fuji.

What could be improved: It was very busy during the week already so had to wait like 15 minutes for breakfast to get a table. Also very busy in the park and you had waiting lines of 180 minutes per ride skip the line tickets are available for 2600 Yen per ride plus the fee of the attraction.

Really nice and clean room with mt. fuji view. Suitable for families with kids as the room is spacious enough. Highly recommended.

What could be improved: The toaster or should I say a very small toaster oven that only uses 2 pieces at a time and you have to turn it. They need multiple pop up toasters or slide one that takes multiple and both sides. Otherwise a great set-up for breakfast.

Great clean hotel. Staff were friendly and helpful. We didn’t like pillows as they were flat so asked for thicker ones and they were provided with no issues. Great view of Fuji from room.
Free shuttle bus into town and nearby attractions worked well for us.

What could be improved: No real issues at all. It’s showing its age a bit but is well maintained.

Beautiful views from the hotel. The restaurant food is delicious. The connection to the park is easy and the facility to ride a bus from and to Tokyo right out the hotel definitely gave us a great experience

What could be improved: Would be nice to have a private onsen in the room since I couldn’t use the public one due to tattoos.

I also didn’t necessarily like getting free admission to Fuji q highland when the roller coasters weren’t working due to the snow.
