Tenseien

250-0311 Kanagawa, Hakone, Yumoto 682, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what struck me first about Tenseien? The smell of sulfur hit me the moment I stepped out of the taxi – and I mean that in the best possible way. This place sits right in the heart of Hakone-Yumoto, maybe a five-minute walk from the train station, and honestly, you can’t miss the traditional wooden facade even among all the other ryokans lining the street. It’s one of those spots that’s been around forever (I’m talking generations here), and the locals actually know it by name, which always feels like a good sign to me.
The onsen here is what really sets it apart from the dozen other hot spring hotels you’ll pass on your way in. They’ve got this outdoor bath that overlooks the Hayakawa River – well, sort of overlooks it through the trees anyway – and the water temperature is just perfect, not scalding like some places I’ve been to in the area. The indoor baths are split by gender (obviously), but there’s this communal feeling when you’re soaking there in the evening with other guests, everyone kind of quietly unwinding from their day of hiking or temple-hopping. I actually ended up chatting with a couple from Osaka who recommended this incredible soba place just down the hill – that’s the kind of atmosphere this place creates.
What I really appreciated was how they handle the whole ryokan experience without making it feel stuffy or intimidating for first-timers. The staff speaks enough English to help you out, but they’re not hovering or overly formal about it. My room was traditional tatami with futon bedding (which, heads up, might be tough if you have back issues), but the views of the surrounding mountains through those paper screens were honestly worth any minor discomfort. The kaiseki dinner they serve in your room is pretty spectacular – lots of local seasonal stuff, beautifully presented, though I’ll warn you it’s a LOT of food. Breakfast was simpler but hit the spot, especially after a morning soak.
The location is actually perfect for exploring Hakone without dealing with the crowds up at Lake Ashi. You’re right on the Old Tokaido road, so you can walk to several temples and shrines, plus there’s a convenience store literally next door for any random stuff you forgot to pack. Parking is tight if you’re driving – they have spots but you’ll want to arrive early in the day. The 8.7 rating feels about right to me; it’s not luxury in the Western sense, but it’s authentic and comfortable, with that genuine hospitality that makes Japanese ryokans special. If you’re looking for your first real hot springs experience or just want to decompress somewhere that feels genuinely Japanese rather than touristy, Tenseien delivers without breaking the bank.

Here for solo travelling as a female, first time staying at a ryokan. Although English communication is rather limited, staffs are very helpful -- they really tried their best to help and explain how things work there. What could be improved: Location was a bit far from the Hakone-Yumoto station, so if you are planning to stay here, I would...

Nice little mountain park of the hotel, stamps to collect for the kids, onsen open until after midnight. Super breakfast and dinner buffet. All in all still fantastic. What could be improved: Toilet looked clean but still smelled. I fixed that by wiping the hidden places myself. At breakfast/dinner, the smell of oil was pungent and clothes then...
