HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, when I first pulled up to Kansyokan in Ohori, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the address (999-6211) sounds like it’s in the middle of nowhere, and well, it sort of is, but in the best possible way. This traditional ryokan sits in Mogami district where the mountains actually breathe around you, and I mean that literally – you can hear the forest settling at night in a way that makes you realize how much city noise you carry in your shoulders.

The thing about Kansyokan is that it gets the balance right between authentic Japanese hospitality and the little comforts that make a 4-star rating feel earned rather than inflated. The staff genuinely knows your name by day two (not because they’re reading name tags, but because they actually remember), and the onsen here uses natural hot spring water that has this mineral smell – not sulfurous exactly, more like warm stone after rain. What really got me was how they handle dinner service; instead of the sometimes overwhelming kaiseki parade you get at some places, they pace everything so you can actually taste each course. The local Yamagata beef they serve is incredible, though honestly, at that 8.8 rating level, you’d expect nothing less.

Location-wise, you’re about twenty minutes from central Mogami if you need supplies, but the real draw is being this close to hiking trails that most tourists never find. The ryokan sits near enough to the Mogami River that you can walk down in the early morning – I’m talking 6 AM when the mist is still hanging low – and have the whole riverside to yourself. Parking is no issue at all (thank god, because some of these mountain roads test your driving confidence), and check-in was refreshingly smooth for a place that feels this tucked away. My only minor gripe? The walls between rooms aren’t quite as thick as you’d hope, so you might catch conversations from neighboring guests, but honestly, most people come here for the quiet anyway, so it’s rarely an issue. The futon bedding takes a night or two if you’re not used to sleeping closer to the floor, but there’s something about waking up in that traditional setting with mountain light filtering through shoji screens that makes the cultural immersion worth any initial stiffness in your back.

The Tatami-Room with the Kotatsu was amazingly comfortable. The view from the room was amazing and the public bath was breathtaking. There's nothing quite like being in an outside Onsen surrounded by snow in the middle of the night.

An old, established ryokan in a beautiful location in Yamagata Prefecture. The staff were professional and very helpful. On the Sunday, they suggested taking the hotel shuttle to Shinjo as there was space for myself and the friends I was travelling with. Dinner was the norm for a ryokan - local and seasonal delicacies beautifully prepared...

An old, established ryokan in a beautiful location in Yamagata Prefecture. The staff were professional and very helpful. On the Sunday, they suggested taking the hotel shuttle to Shinjo as there was space for myself and the friends I was travelling with. Dinner was the norm for a ryokan - local and seasonal delicacies beautifully prepared. Breakfast was buffet style. The onsen baths both had ryotenburo; given the quantity of snow this year, the setting was magical.

What could be improved: Nothing.
