Hotel Ichibata

690-0852 Shimane, Matsue, Chidoricho 30, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Honestly, I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Hotel Ichibata – it’s this slightly imposing building that sits right on the shores of Lake Shinji, and from the street it looks pretty standard for a Japanese business hotel. But you know what? The moment you walk into that lobby and see the lake stretching out through those massive windows, it hits you why this place has been around since the 1960s and still draws people in.
The thing about Matsue is that most tourists just breeze through on their way to bigger cities, but if you’re smart enough to stay overnight, Ichibata puts you right in the sweet spot. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Matsue Castle (and I mean the actual castle, not some reconstruction), and the hotel sits on this prime stretch of lakefront that locals call the best spot to watch the sunset. The rooms facing the lake – well, they’re worth the extra cost, especially if you can snag one of the higher floors. I stayed on the eighth floor and could see clear across to the mountains on the other side, plus you get this amazing view of those traditional fishing boats that still work the lake at dawn. The rooms themselves are pretty standard Japanese hotel fare – not huge, but everything works and it’s clean as you’d expect. The beds are actually decent, which isn’t always a given at this price point.
What really sold me on the place was the staff’s local knowledge – the front desk guy drew me a little map showing the back entrance to the castle grounds that skips most of the tour groups, and the restaurant manager steered me toward this tiny soba place about ten minutes away that I never would have found otherwise. Speaking of food, their breakfast buffet is surprisingly solid for a hotel this size, with proper local specialties like Shimane wagyu and Lake Shinji’s famous corbicula clams alongside the usual hotel spread. The onsen on the top floor is small but gets the job done, especially after walking around the castle town all day – though it can get crowded around 8 PM when the tour groups roll in. Parking is free and easy, which is honestly a relief after dealing with some of the cramped lots in other Japanese cities. The only real downside is that the building shows its age in places – the elevators are slow, and some of the common areas could use updating – but that’s pretty minor when you’re paying significantly less than you would for similar lake views in more touristy spots. If you’re planning to explore the San’in region properly instead of just rushing through, this is exactly the kind of place that lets you settle in and actually experience Matsue like a temporary local rather than just another tourist checking boxes.

Marco from Japan (13 October 2023)
Spotlessly clean. Right next to the train station to Izumo Taisha. Decent size room. What could be improved: There’s not a lot of stuff around, and Matsue station is quite far (about 30 mins walking) although it can be reached by bus (the stop is right next to the hotel). Please instruct your staff that residents of Japan don’t need to have their...

Ralph from Japan (7 March 2023)
The breakfast was very good; the location was also good tho' a courtesy bus to Matsue Station would be nice. Nobody told us that the excellent Lakeline Bus stopped just outside the hotel. We found out by ourselves! Meals are expensive, and it might be useful to future visitors if you tell them that the "Shijimi-kan" about 150 metres west of the...
Andrew from Australia (3 February 2025)
Very clean
What could be improved: Lack of staff being able to talk English
Sompong from Thailand (8 November 2024)
