HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what hit me first when I walked into Kotohira Kadan? The smell – this incredible mix of tatami mats and hinoki cypress that immediately tells you you’re somewhere special. I mean, sure, it’s technically a 4-star place, but honestly, it feels way more luxurious than that rating suggests. The 9.1 guest score makes total sense once you’ve actually stayed here.

The location is pretty brilliant if you’re planning to visit Konpira-san shrine – and let’s be real, that’s probably why you’re in Kotohira in the first place. Most people don’t realize the climb up those 1,368 stone steps starts just a few minutes’ walk from the hotel. I actually appreciated having somewhere this nice to collapse into after that pilgrimage (my legs were absolutely shot). The staff seemed genuinely amused by all the tired, slightly sweaty guests stumbling back in the late afternoon. What really impressed me was how they handle the traditional ryokan experience without making it feel stuffy or intimidating. The kaiseki dinner – well, it’s one of those meals where you keep thinking “okay, surely this is the last course” and then they bring out something even more beautiful. I’m usually pretty skeptical about hotel food, but the seasonal ingredients here are clearly sourced from somewhere very local and very good.

The onsen situation is where this place really shines. There’s something almost meditative about soaking in those hot spring baths after a day of shrine-hopping, especially in the evening when things quiet down. The water has this slightly sulfurous smell that takes some getting used to, but your skin feels incredible afterward. Just heads up – it can get pretty busy around dinner time, so I’d recommend going either early morning or later at night if you want some peace. The rooms themselves have that perfect balance of traditional Japanese aesthetics with modern comfort (thank god for proper air conditioning in summer). I stayed in one of the tatami rooms overlooking the small garden, and honestly, just sitting there with morning coffee watching the koi swim around was worth the trip alone. One tiny thing – the walls are a bit thin, so you might hear your neighbors if they’re up late chatting, but it never felt disruptive. Check-in was smooth, though they do prefer if you arrive before 6 PM for dinner service planning. Parking is free and surprisingly spacious for Japan, which is a real bonus if you’re driving around Shikoku.

This property is truly a gem. While I can comment only on the room we stayed in, room 503 which was a Japanese style room, I would rate it as a 10/10. The staff are all lovely. Every single staff member that crossed our path was very helpful, polite and friendly. Our room had a gorgeous 180 degree view over Kotohira. The sound of the river below...

Every single staff member that crossed our path was very helpful, polite and friendly. Our room had a gorgeous 180 degree view over Kotohira. The sound of the river below was so nice.
If I was to stay again, I would stay in a western style room simply because I found it difficult to get off the floor. I peeked in room 302 on my way out and think any western room on that side of that building with that view, could not be beat.
We did not have our dinners at the hotel but did have breakfast every day for the four days we were there. The amount of food is enough to set you for the entire day. I enjoyed a vegetarian western breakfast while my husband enjoyed the Japanese breakfast. The food is delicious, the presentation is beautifully done and the service is exceptional. Such a hard working team.
The staff were happy to take us to the train station whoever we wanted to go on a day trip. A day trip to the Iya valley and one to the Ritsurin gardens should not be missed.

Lovely room with a great view of the garden and distant mountains. The private bath on our balcony was excellent plus there was another bath that could be booked for private use with a view of the forest, free of charge. We had 2 kaiseki dinners which were delicious. There was plenty of food but the portions were more manageable than some similar hotels. The tempura was the best we've ever had!
Staff were very friendly. You can walk to Kompira-san via a direct route from behind the property. There was a hotel shuttle bus to the station.

Spacious room in a ryokan in Kotohira. It is around 5 minutes' walk to the shrine approach with restaurants and shops, with the train stations a little further away. Breakfast and dinner were excellent, the private outdoor onsen was great and the staff are welcoming.

What could be improved: Everything was great.

The location is great, with the famous Kotohira Shrine just nearby the hotel. We love the onsen on the balcony, and exceptional breakfast and dinner prepared to us. Plus point to Judee who serves us with all the patience. The hotel alone would let you take lots of photos, it's too beautiful! What could be improved: The car access to the lobby...

What could be improved: The car access to the lobby would be a little bit tricky, but not an issue.

I liked the setting in a beautiful garden. The view from my tatami room was superb. Although a western style bed was unavailable on the nights I booked, I found the futon comfortable and at 74 I was able to get off the floor without too much difficulty. I like that you could access YouTube on the TV as I travel alone and was able to have English...

I liked the setting in a beautiful garden. The view from my tatami room was superb. Although a western style bed was unavailable on the nights I booked, I found the futon comfortable and at 74 I was able to get off the floor without too much difficulty. I like that you could access YouTube on the TV as I travel alone and was able to have English programs at night. The room was very spacious.

What could be improved: I would have like to have coffee sachets and larger cups in the room. There was only tea.

Stunning property, with spacious, clean rooms that were well-equipped. We loved our outdoor bath and the view of the town from our room. Great location - a short walk to Konpira Grand Theatre and the main shrine in Kotohira, Konpira-san. Both are a must-visit. Tasty, traditional Japanese-style breakfast. We would love to return.
