Hokuten no Oka Abashiriko Tsuruga Resort

099-2421 Hokkaido, Abashiri, Yobito 159, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what caught me off guard about Hokuten no Oka Abashiriko Tsuruga Resort? The way it just sits there on that hill overlooking Lake Abashiri like it’s been part of the landscape forever. I mean, you’re driving through Yobito – and honestly, you might miss the turnoff if you’re not paying attention – but once you wind up that road, the whole thing opens up in front of you. The lake stretches out below, and on a clear day you can actually see the Okhotsk Sea in the distance. It’s one of those views that makes you understand why they built a resort here in the first place.
The building itself has that distinctly Japanese resort feel – not flashy, but solid and thoughtful. Check-in was surprisingly smooth for a place that clearly gets busy during drift ice season (which, if you’re planning a winter visit, book way ahead because everyone wants to see those ice floes). The staff actually seemed to know what they were talking about when I asked about the best times to spot the ice from the hotel – apparently the observation deck on the top floor is where you want to be around sunrise. The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star place, though I’ll be honest, mine faced inland rather than the lake, which was a bit disappointing. If you’re booking, definitely specify lake view if that matters to you.
What really won me over was the onsen situation. The outdoor bath – and this is key – faces directly toward the lake, so you’re soaking in hot spring water while staring out at this massive expanse of water and sky. In winter, I imagine it’s pretty magical with all that snow and ice, though I was there in late spring when everything was just starting to green up. The water has that slightly sulfurous smell that tells you it’s the real deal, not just heated tap water. There’s also something oddly satisfying about the whole ritual of it – the careful washing before getting in, the quiet conversations with other guests, the way time just sort of… stops. The indoor baths are nice too, but honestly, why would you bother when you’ve got that outdoor option?
The restaurant leans heavily into local Hokkaido ingredients – lots of seafood from the Okhotsk, some surprisingly good beef, and they do this thing with local vegetables that actually made me care about turnips for the first time in my life. Breakfast is that elaborate Japanese spread that takes forever to work through but leaves you satisfied until dinner. Fair warning though: if you’re hoping for extensive English menus or staff, you might struggle a bit. It’s not a deal-breaker, but bringing a translation app wouldn’t hurt.
Here’s the thing – this isn’t a resort where you’re going to find tons of activities or entertainment. It’s more about slowing down, soaking in those hot springs, maybe taking walks around the lake, and just being present in this pretty spectacular corner of Hokkaido. If you’re the type who needs constant stimulation, you might get restless. But if you want to decompress and experience something genuinely Japanese without the crowds you’d find in more famous hot spring destinations, this place delivers. That 8.7 rating isn’t flashy, but it feels about right – solid, reliable, and memorable in the best possible way.

Andrea from Singapore (16 March 2025)
Beautiful onsen. Large room. Clean facilities. Receptionist staff very polite.
What could be improved: Not good restaurant, with average food, poor selection, repetitive and bland. Absurd breakfast hours: such a short window that pushes everyone at the restaurant like rush hours at the same time.
Yessie from Indonesia (23 February 2025)
Property was beautiful in the side of Lake Abashiri. Staffs were friendly although speaks a little English, they still managed to help. Lunch and breakfast is superb

The whole experience was excellent
Mira from Philippines (3 July 2024)
Beautifully designed with local style, comfortable western bed option but with a ryokan feel. My room with the private onsen was the best. Half board of breakfast and dinner included, with surprise meals beginning on the 3rd night of stay. I stayed for a week. What could be improved: Nothing close by so have to taxi everywhere but I guess that’s...
A from Singapore (30 June 2024)
The buffet spread for both breakfast & dinner were good, especially the DIY hotpot in the cool weather. Staff were friendly, everywhere is clean. The hotel provides everything we wanted, there is nothing else to ask for. It is a pity that I only stayed for a night but will definitely be back
What could be improved: nothing!
