Shosuke-no-Yado Takinoyu

965-0814 Fukushima, Aizuwakamatsu, Higashiyamamachi Yumoto Takinyu 108, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what struck me first about Shosuke-no-Yado Takinoyu? The sound of actual water rushing somewhere nearby – turns out “Takinoyu” literally means “waterfall hot spring,” and they weren’t kidding around with that name. This place sits tucked into the Higashiyama Onsen district of Aizuwakamatsu, which honestly feels like stepping back a few decades in the best possible way. The whole area has this old-school hot spring town vibe that’s become pretty rare these days, especially one that’s not completely overrun with tour buses.
What really sets this ryokan apart is how they’ve managed to keep things traditional without making you feel like you’re sleeping in a museum. The tatami rooms actually smell like proper tatami – that clean, grassy scent that tells you they take care of the place. I mean, some of these older properties can feel a bit tired, but Takinoyu has this lived-in comfort that works. The onsen itself is the real draw though – there’s something about soaking in mineral-rich water while listening to that waterfall that just melts away whatever stress you brought from Tokyo or wherever. They’ve got both indoor and outdoor baths, and honestly, even in winter the outdoor one is incredible (though you might need a minute to work up the courage).
The service hits that sweet spot between attentive and not hovering over you constantly. Check-in was smooth, and the staff seemed genuinely pleased to explain the local area rather than just going through the motions. Parking’s right there, which is clutch if you’re driving – a lot of these mountain onsen towns make you park halfway down the hill and haul your luggage. The kaiseki dinner was solid traditional fare, nothing revolutionary but executed well, and breakfast had enough variety to keep you happy. Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute drive from Tsuruga Castle if you want to do the tourist thing, but honestly, I found myself just wandering around the Higashiyama area most of the time. There’s something peaceful about those narrow streets lined with other ryokan and the occasional local wandering to the public baths. It gets pretty quiet after dinner – this isn’t a party destination, which is exactly the point.

Amazing onsen, really nice staff
What could be improved: Bedroom bathroom really, really small, hot water shower didn’t work at 7 am, but I went to the onsen to take the shower there with the onsen as a bonus
Syamim from Singapore (23 December 2024)

Tan from Singapore (29 May 2024)
Authentic and very good Japanese food.Room is clean and good service. Nice Onsen pool with free ice cream and beer, served outside onsen room. What could be improved: Room a little big small but well maintained. A little disappointed as room assigned was same floor as smoking room… some how feeling not comfortable for non smoking customers like...
Sarah from Japan (4 May 2024)
-Beautiful location next to a river and waterfall, surrounded by nature
-Delicious and aesthetic meals
-You can rent a private hot spring bath for an extra fee
-Friendly staff
What could be improved: -Room was slightly smaller than expected
-Some English on the welcome pamphlet would be nice for overseas guests :)
Nina from United States (28 April 2024)
Welcome service, onsen, breakfast, view, lounge areas, choice of women’s yukata rental
What could be improved: Older building had some quirks (navigating around and through restaurant) and need for repairs, picture for standard room stay is not representative
Ian from Australia (7 April 2024)
The man out front helping with parking and the man assisting in the restaurant were exceptional and extremely helpful and friendly. In general, they were all extremely good, given the language barrier. The private bath, with the view of the falls, is wonderful. For anyone over 5' 5" or 175 cm, be aware that the building is 135 yrs old, so has low...
David from Australia (26 February 2024)
This recently and very tastefully renovated onsen was delightful. With an excellent location in a valley on the fringe of Aizuwakamatsu, but only a short bus or taxi ride away from the centre of town (a regular bus service stops right outside the ryokan) we enjoyed the view of a rapidly flowing stream with beautiful waterfalls and bamboo groves...
Cecilia from Singapore (22 February 2024)
Nice food and many option for onsen .
Nice view from room
What could be improved: Need to arrange own transport to hotel
Kirsten from New Zealand (11 February 2024)
Very traditional, Amazing Onsen, great location. The staff were very friendly despite the language barrier especially in the restaurant. The breakfast and dinner were delicious. What could be improved: Our room was very much at the end of the hotel. It felt that because we used Booking.com this was the reason. This may just be our perception...
Amanda from Japan (4 February 2024)
This review is a bit complicated because overall, we had a really great experience. The room (see more below) was spacious and the beds were comfortable. They even had extra pillows, and not the typical bean pillows in most ryokan. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and we were seated in the dining hall overlooking the waterfall along the river...
