HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what caught me off guard about the Centurion Hotel&Spa Vintage Kobe? It’s actually on Minatojima, which is technically an artificial island – sounds weird, I know, but hear me out. When I first booked this place, I was worried it’d feel disconnected from the real Kobe, but honestly, it’s this perfect sweet spot where you get those incredible harbor views without the chaos of downtown Sannomiya. The hotel itself has this understated elegance that feels authentically Japanese rather than trying too hard to impress foreign visitors. Check-in was smooth (they actually speak decent English here, which isn’t always a given), and the lobby has this warm, woody feel that immediately signals you’re somewhere special.

The spa element isn’t just marketing fluff – I mean, you can genuinely smell the mineral-rich waters as soon as you step off the elevator on the spa floor. The vintage aspect shows up in thoughtful details like the carefully chosen furniture and these gorgeous ceramic pieces scattered throughout the common areas. What really sold me was the view from my room – you’re looking out over Kobe Harbor with the city rising up those famous hills in the background, especially stunning at sunset when all those lights start twinkling. The rooms themselves are spacious by Japanese standards (you can actually open your suitcase without doing yoga moves around the bed), and the bathrooms have those deep soaking tubs that make you wonder why Western hotels ever thought shallow bathtubs were acceptable.

Location-wise, you’re about a ten-minute ride to Sannomiya Station, and there’s a convenient shuttle that runs regularly – though honestly, the walk along the waterfront is pretty lovely when the weather’s nice. The island has this modern, planned feel with wide pedestrian paths and interesting architecture, plus you’re right next to the Kobe Convention Center if that matters for your trip. I was surprised by how quiet it stays at night despite being near the port; you get the gentle sound of water but none of the urban noise that can keep you up in central Kobe. The hotel restaurant does solid work with both Japanese and Western breakfast options (their coffee is actually good, not that bitter hotel stuff), and room service arrives faster than expected. Sure, it’s not the flashiest place in Kobe, but there’s something refreshing about a hotel that focuses on doing the fundamentals really well rather than overwhelming you with gimmicks. For the price point and that 8.3 rating, it delivers exactly what you’d hope for – comfortable, well-designed, genuinely relaxing, with staff who seem to actually care about your experience.

SPA, COFFEE, Rooftop, Location.

What could be improved: hair dryer is broken.

Bo from Japan (24 January 2025)

Great breakfast, great onsen and sauna. Friendly staff and a reasonable price.

What could be improved: If you want to stay right next to the convention center or the city center of Kobe this place is not for you. But if you don’t mind walking and/or taking some trains then you can’t go wrong with this hotel.

Close to the airport. Has a convenient store next to it.Easy to find. Had a restaurant but didn’t try. What could be improved: The bridge going toward the property doesn’t have an elevator at both ends, so be careful with luggage. They don’t have black out curtains . The driving school lights are bright. Industrial area very loud in the morning...

The view from the bar/restaurant is great and the rooms are quiet and comfortable.

What could be improved: Feels a little removed from the city itself, but didn't take long to walk to the Portliner to get to town.
The no tattoo policy for the onsen is a bit outdated given the number of tourists in Japan.

The cost-benefit ratio was what attracted me the most. The place is very fragrant, very clean, and the service is good. However, it would be important to improve the signage at the building’s entrance, as we had difficulty understanding that the reception is on the 9th floor. Additionally, we found the access to the apartment to be very insecure,...

The cost-benefit ratio was what attracted me the most. The place is very fragrant, very clean, and the service is good. However, it would be important to improve the signage at the building’s entrance, as we had difficulty understanding that the reception is on the 9th floor. Additionally, we found the access to the apartment to be very insecure, as anyone can enter.

What could be improved: I believe it is necessary to include information on Booking about the parking, the distance to the train station, and better clarify that the reception is on the 9th floor.

Very pleasant and very clean, convenience store at doorstep and with a thermal bath on premises.

What could be improved: Hotel is just in an industrial area which might be convenient to some or if you come by car.
