Ryokan Sumiya Kihoan

HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of ryokans across Japan, but Sumiya Kihoan in Kameoka honestly caught me off guard – and I mean that in the best way possible. You know how some traditional inns can feel a bit stuffy or like they’re trying too hard to impress tourists? This place doesn’t have that problem at all. It sits tucked away in this quiet corner of Kameoka (about 30 minutes from central Kyoto by train, which actually works in your favor because you escape all that tourist chaos), and the moment you step inside, there’s this immediate sense of… well, authentic calm, I guess.

The thing about Sumiya Kihoan is that it gets the details right in ways that matter. The tatami floors have that perfect slight give under your feet – not too soft, not too firm – and they clearly maintain them well because there’s none of that musty smell you sometimes get in older buildings. Your room overlooks these meticulously kept gardens, and honestly, I found myself just sitting there in the morning with tea, watching how the light changes through the maple branches. The onsen here deserves special mention too – it’s not huge like some of the famous resort baths, but the water quality is exceptional (they source it from local hot springs), and there’s something really peaceful about soaking while looking out at the surrounding hills. I actually preferred the smaller, more intimate setting.

What really sold me on this place, though, was how the staff manages to be incredibly attentive without hovering. They’ll explain the kaiseki dinner courses if you want (and you do want that – the seasonal ingredients are sourced locally, and the presentation is beautiful), but they’re not constantly checking if everything’s okay every five minutes. The meals themselves… I mean, I’m not usually one to get excited about fancy food, but when they brought out this delicate river fish course paired with local sake, it just made sense in a way that’s hard to explain. You’re in Kameoka, surrounded by these rivers and mountains, eating ingredients that came from right here – there’s a connection there that feels genuine rather than manufactured. The 9.3 rating makes complete sense once you’ve been there, because it’s one of those places that delivers on the promise of what a ryokan experience should be, without any of the pretension or tourist-trap feeling you might worry about. If you’re looking for an authentic taste of traditional Japanese hospitality that doesn’t feel like performance art, this is your spot.

We were thoughtfully greeted and shown around the facilities, which was particularly helpful since this was our first time visiting a ryokan. The Japanese tatami room we booked was beautiful and spacious, the private hot springs bath beautifully situated with views of the hillside.

What could be improved: I was informed that the check-out time was 11am. However, this wasn't clear to me that this specifically meant the time the shuttlebus was leaving, making departure feeling very rushed. Check-out time to me means the time by which you must have cleared out the room and checked-out at the front desk. I think it should be explained more clearly. Some of the furnishings are visible quite old and worn, such as the backs of the seats in the main room.

What could be improved: We didn't use the public onsen but that was our own fault

I loved the staff and the food was amazing. I paid for Kaiseki meals for all the nights I was there and it was so beautifully served and thoughtfully presented. The food was also tasty and so fun to experience. The meals all had fresh local ingredients as well and they provided plentiful handmade sushi to bring with us after the meals. We were so stuffed though so we often just brought it out with us when we went sight seeing.

The room was massive with a private onsen bath and sauna as well. The outdoor bathe was beautiful and never super crowded. there is also an outdoor space around the onsen that was a lovely walk before or after dinner.

What could be improved: I paid for a room with an outdoor private onsen. It was right by a road so no quiet soaks during the rush hours. However in the evening it was so quiet and relaxing and I don't regret booking it

This place is beautiful. The staff go above and beyond.

What could be improved: It's a bit far from town with minimal transportation options. Good if you want to get away, but worth considering if you also want to go sight seeing.
