Asahidake Yumoto Yukomanso

071-1472 Hokkaido, Higashikawa, Yukomanbetsu Asahidake Onsen, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what? I was honestly skeptical when I first pulled up to Asahidake Yumoto Yukomanso – it’s literally in the middle of nowhere, about an hour’s winding drive from Asahikawa through some seriously stunning mountain roads. But sometimes the most remote places turn out to be exactly what you didn’t know you needed.
This place sits right at the base of Mount Asahidake (Japan’s highest peak, actually), and I mean right at the base – you wake up and there’s this massive volcanic mountain just looming outside your window. The hotel itself has that classic Japanese mountain lodge feel, sort of rustic but polished, if that makes sense. What really sets it apart though is the onsen situation. They’ve got these outdoor hot spring baths where you’re literally soaking in mineral-rich water while staring up at snow-capped peaks, and honestly, it’s pretty magical. The water has this slight sulfur smell – nothing overwhelming – that just screams “authentic hot spring experience.” I visited in late October when the autumn colors were peak, and sitting in those steaming pools while watching the leaves drift down… well, it beats any spa I’ve been to.
The rooms are what you’d expect from a solid 4-star Japanese mountain hotel – clean, comfortable, with those impossibly soft tatami mats and futons that somehow give you the best sleep of your life. Staff here actually speak decent English (not always a given in remote Hokkaido), and they’re genuinely helpful about hiking recommendations and shuttle times. Speaking of which – you’ll definitely want to take advantage of their shuttle to the Asahidake Ropeway if you’re here for hiking or skiing. It’s only about 10 minutes away, but having that transportation sorted is clutch since you’re pretty much committed to staying put once you’re here. The food deserves a mention too – they do this kaiseki dinner service that features local Hokkaido ingredients, and I’m still thinking about their snow crab and venison dishes months later. Fair warning though: if you’re looking for nightlife or shopping, you’re barking up the wrong tree. The nearest convenience store is back in Higashikawa town, so come prepared. But that isolation is exactly the point – this is where you come to disconnect, soak in some incredible hot springs, and wake up to mountain views that’ll make your Instagram followers properly jealous. The 9.3 rating isn’t just hype; it’s earned through consistently delivering that perfect balance of Japanese hospitality and natural beauty that makes Hokkaido special.

Although old the rooms were warm, clean and comfortable. Onsens were very nice and quiet alrhough outdoors onsen was closed What could be improved: I was not aware at the time of booking that outside onsens were closed. there is a huge fire place but the fire was always tiny in the lodge area, not inviting. Also the coffee / tea area was chilly and...

Ryokan feel to it. We had yukata and slippers to wear to the onsens and dinner. Dinner was fabulous—so many dishes and so much variety! Breakfast was also quite good and filling. The onsens were comfortable, well thought out, and varied. I appreciated that they did not smell of sulfur (at least the one I went to). Coffee was available much of...
