I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Hotel O Setouchi in Kanonji, I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect. The building sits quietly in the Ariake area, and from the outside, it’s understated in that way that either means you’re about to be pleasantly surprised or slightly disappointed. Well, this one definitely falls into the pleasant surprise category.

What struck me immediately was how the staff seemed to genuinely care about getting things right. Check-in was smooth (they actually remembered my name without constantly glancing at their screen), and the lobby has this calm, modern Japanese aesthetic that doesn’t try too hard – you know what I mean? Clean lines, natural materials, but not so minimalist that it feels cold. The rooms are spacious by Japanese standards, and honestly, the attention to detail is pretty impressive. The bedding is that perfect level of firmness, and they’ve got those little touches that matter when you’re tired – good lighting for reading, plenty of outlets, and a bathroom that actually has counter space for your stuff.

But here’s the thing that really sets this place apart: the location is actually brilliant once you understand the area. Kanonji isn’t on most tourists’ radar, which means you get to experience this part of Kagawa without fighting crowds. The Seto Inland Sea is right there, and if you wake up early – I mean really early, like 6 AM – the morning light over the water is something else. There’s a small fishing harbor within walking distance where locals are already setting up for the day, and you can grab incredibly fresh seafood for breakfast if you’re adventurous. The hotel staff pointed me toward a tiny udon shop about ten minutes away (follow the road toward the coast, then turn left at the old shrine) that serves what might be the best sanuki udon I’ve had in Kagawa – and that’s saying something in this prefecture.

Parking is easy and free, which anyone who’s driven around Japan will appreciate. The neighborhood gets quiet after sunset, so if you’re a light sleeper, you’ll actually sleep well here. I stayed during cherry blossom season and expected it to be chaos, but apparently Kanonji’s slightly off the beaten path location means even peak season stays manageable. The only minor thing I’d mention is that English signage around town is pretty limited, but the hotel staff speaks enough English to help you navigate, and honestly, that’s part of the charm of staying somewhere that hasn’t been completely tourist-ized yet. This isn’t a resort where everything’s handed to you – it’s more like a really comfortable base for exploring a part of Japan that still feels authentic. If you want to experience the Seto Inland Sea area without the Naoshima crowds, and you appreciate thoughtful hospitality over flashy amenities, Hotel O Setouchi delivers exactly what you didn’t know you were looking for.
