HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what struck me first about Numazu Club? It’s this quietly sophisticated place that doesn’t try too hard to impress you – which, honestly, makes it even more impressive. Tucked away in the Sembon area, it’s got this perfect location where you’re close enough to everything but far enough from the tourist chaos. I mean, you’re literally a few minutes from Numazu Port where the morning fish auctions happen (get there by 6 AM if you’re into that sort of thing), but the hotel itself sits in this peaceful pocket where the only sounds at night are maybe some distant waves and the occasional train heading toward Kozu.

The staff here actually remembers your name after day one, which – let’s be real – doesn’t happen at most places anymore. They’ve got this way of being helpful without hovering, and they know the area inside out. When I mentioned wanting good sushi that wasn’t touristy, the front desk guy (Tanaka-san, I think?) sent me to this tiny place on a side street near the station that I never would’ve found otherwise. The rooms themselves feel more like upscale apartments than hotel rooms, honestly. Everything’s got this clean, minimalist vibe but with actual character – not that sterile modern look you get sometimes. The beds are properly firm (none of that sinking-into-quicksand nonsense), and the bathrooms have those deep soaking tubs that make you understand why Japanese bath culture is a thing.

What really sets this place apart though is how it fits into Numazu itself. You’re about twenty minutes by train from the craziness of Atami, but you get to experience this working port town that most tourists completely skip. The hotel’s walking distance from Senbon Beach – not the most spectacular beach in Japan, I’ll be honest, but there’s something nice about having that morning walk option along the water. Plus, if you’re here during summer festival season, you can actually see some of the fireworks from the upper floor rooms. Parking’s free (miracle in Japan), check-in was smooth even with my terrible Japanese, and the breakfast – well, it’s not going to change your life, but the local fish is fresh and they do this miso soup that’s definitely homemade. The only minor thing is that the elevator’s a bit slow, but that just gives you more time to look at their collection of local art prints. Honestly, if you want to experience a real Japanese coastal town without fighting crowds and paying Tokyo prices, this is exactly the kind of place you’re looking for.

My husband and I stayed at Numazu Club Oct 2 - 3. We really enjoyed our stay in all respects. The architecture of the hotel and the hotel garden grounds were absolutely beautiful. The garden was a traditional Japanese garden perfect for taking a stroll. We also really enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the hotel restaurant. The restaurant itself is located inside a historical Japanese tea house which being able to eat within was an experience onto itself. Also the food at the restaurant was a fusion of Japanese and Szechuan cuisine, which brought out the best of both cuisines. Finally, a shout out to the staff, especially general manager Imai-san, who really went out of their way to make our stay welcoming. Imai-san showed us a hidden path to the Senbonhama beach for awesome views of the ocean and Mt Fuji. Also after dinner our waiter kindly gave us a tour of the traditional Japanese tea house that the restaurant sits in. On a last note, our room was also really great. We stayed in a western style room on the second floor. The room was spacious and design was a mix of Japanese and western style with a large balcony overlooking the hotel grounds. Also the room itself was very well maintained and contained a full set of qualities amenities.

Numazu Club was well worth the drive to Numazu just to stay there. I would not think of it as a hotel, nor an onsen, but rather a getaway. The rooms were modern, minimalistic and no small detail was missed. Expect personal interactions with friendly and attentive staff, from being greeted at the gate (car) to being checked in privately in your room. In our case the manager checked us in, as well as coming to check on us and other guests during breakfast and dinner. The breakfast and dinner in the teahouse should not be missed. It was exquisitely prepared and a sensation for all senses, do note that it is Japanese and Chinese fusion. You will be welcomed by locally produced treats and drinks, and definitely ask for turn down service to experience more local products. Our open-air bath added to the already tranquil and quiet atmosphere and I could sit on the balcony soaking up the sun for hours. There is not that much to do around Numazu, but if you like feeling at peace you won’t leave the accommodation anyway. There is a fish market with multiple sushi restaurants less than a 15min walk away, which we enjoyed for lunch.

What could be improved: None of this bothered us, but it might be good to note.
There was no TV in the room, we didn’t miss it at all and barely touched the iPad we brought along.
If you’re used to onsen hotels, this is not that. The facilities were modern and well thought out, like a spa, with an indoor and outdoor onsen for woman and an outdoor onsen for men. But it is very small, and luckily when we used it respectively we were both the only people there, otherwise it might be a bit close for comfort. Considering that there are only a few rooms on the property each equipped with their own private onsen bath, this shouldn’t be a dealbreaker.

We had requested if possible to prepare a vegetarian meal with just salads or other non meat items but were told this was not possible. Necessitated having to leave the hotel to find somewhere to eat. Would have expected a hotel of this standard to be more accomodating to a relatively easy request.
