The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko

321-1661 Tochigi, Nikko, Chugushi 2482, Japan
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ve stayed at my fair share of mountain resorts, but The Ritz-Carlton in Nikko actually gets it right in a way that surprised me. You know how most luxury places try to plop down some generic five-star experience wherever they land? Well, this one — tucked away in Chugushi along the shores of Lake Chuzenji — feels like they actually thought about where they were building it. The lobby’s got these massive windows that frame the lake perfectly, and honestly, I spent way too much time just sitting there with coffee, watching the morning mist roll off the water. The whole place has this understated elegance that doesn’t scream “look at me” the way some Ritz properties do.
What really impressed me was how they’ve managed to blend that Ritz-Carlton polish with genuine Japanese hospitality — and I mean the real thing, not the westernized version you sometimes get. The staff here knows the area inside and out; they’ll tell you exactly when to hit Kegon Falls before the tour buses arrive (early morning, by the way), or which hiking trails around Mount Nantai are worth your time depending on the season. The rooms themselves are spacious for Japan, with those deep soaking tubs that actually fit a normal-sized human being, and most have lake views that’ll make you forget to check your phone for hours. I stayed in November, and watching the autumn colors reflect in the water from my window was honestly better than any of the Instagram shots I’d seen before booking.
The location is what seals the deal, though. You’re right in the heart of Okunikko, about a 40-minute drive up from Nikko’s main temple area — far enough to feel secluded but close enough that you’re not stuck if you want to explore. Lake Chuzenji is literally across the street, and there’s something magical about stepping out of this polished hotel environment and being immediately surrounded by those ancient cedar forests. The restaurant situation is solid too; their kaiseki dinner service showcases local Tochigi ingredients in ways that feel thoughtful rather than showy. Sure, you’re paying Ritz-Carlton prices (and this isn’t exactly budget-friendly Japan), but when you factor in the setting, the genuine service quality, and the fact that you can walk to some of the country’s most stunning natural scenery, it actually feels worth it. Plus, the onsen-style spa is a nice touch — not traditional, but they’ve incorporated the hot spring culture thoughtfully. If you’re looking for that perfect blend of luxury comfort and authentic Japanese mountain experience, this place delivers without feeling like a theme park version of either.

We were expecting a fine hotel experience for our trip to Nikko but experienced so much more at the Ritz Carlton. Elevated, serene, beautiful facilities and accommodations along with one superlative food experience, made for one of our favorite stays anywhere, ever. Both of our rooms were wonderful, but the suite was just wonderful. All of the...

Beautifully designed hotel. The rooms are huge and havw great views. We had the teppanyaki for dinner which was superb. The onsen was a really relaxing experience.

Beautiful design and view. Lounge and Bar are very good
What could be improved: The Japanese restaurant has zero atmosphere. A minimal dress code should be imposed to avoid shorts and gym wear. Loud and unpleasant.
A carpet in the room would be more cozy
Bickley from Hong Kong (8 March 2024)
