HOTEL OVERVIEW

Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of hotels near national parks, and most of them feel like they’re just there to catch tourists with nowhere else to go. Río Serrano is different – it’s actually one of those places where you walk in and think “okay, someone really thought this through.” The lobby has these massive windows that frame the Paine massif like a living postcard, and honestly, I spent way too much time just sitting there with coffee watching the light change on those peaks.

What really gets me about this place is how they’ve managed to feel upscale without being stuffy about it. The spa – and I’m usually skeptical about hotel spas – actually makes sense here. After a full day hiking the Base Torres trail (which, let me tell you, will humble you), those heated pools overlooking the Serrano River aren’t just nice, they’re practically medicinal. The restaurant surprised me too. You know how hotel food can be… well, hotel food? Here they’re working with local ingredients in ways that don’t feel forced. The Patagonian lamb was incredible, and they pair it with these microgreens they grow on-site. I mean, it’s still pricey – everything in Torres del Paine is – but at least you feel like you’re getting something special.

The rooms themselves are smart without trying too hard to impress. Good blackout curtains (crucial when summer daylight stretches until nearly midnight), powerful showers that actually get hot, and those little touches that matter when you’re dealing with Patagonian weather – like heated bathroom floors and proper ventilation so your wet hiking gear doesn’t turn your room into a swamp. Location-wise, you’re about 15 minutes from the park entrance, which means you can actually get to the popular trails before the tour buses arrive. The staff genuinely knows the area too, not just the standard tourist stuff. They’ll tell you which trails are actually doable if the weather turns (and it will turn – this is Patagonia), and their timing advice for avoiding crowds is spot-on. The only real downside? Well, it books up fast during peak season, and the WiFi can be spotty – though honestly, that might be a feature, not a bug, depending on what you’re looking for. This isn’t a place you stumble into; it’s where you end up when you’ve done your homework and want your base camp to be as memorable as the mountains themselves.

We loved everything about the hotel: location, facilities, personel, food.

What could be improved: Everything was great. They are a bit strict with check in times, which as a guest if you are arriving early might not be the best. But it is their policy and there’s not much to say or complain about.

What could be improved: Probably the worst thing of the hotel was that as soon as we arrived, we were asked to pay $500 (taxes and a deposit). The hotel is already on the expensive side to having to pay right away wasn’t the best welcome and you feel slightly disappointed. They give you a complementary drink after just to wash the bitter taste which helped

Great location for spectacular views of Torres del Paine mountains, seen from all of the lounge areas, restaurants and mountain facing rooms. The hotel was nicely furnished and maintained. Our breakfast, lunch and dinner meals were included in our hotel stay, good/excellent food and options. Besides the food, I also enjoyed some of the local cocktails and drinks from the bar. Instead of lunch for a couple of days as we were out for day trips, we took takeout lunch bags instead. The pool room and the pool with in pool seated and lounger with water jets was nice, the water temperature was fine however I'd prefer it to be a tad warmer. We also did a massage as the spa and it was also good.
While we were there, there was a wine tasting experience, a sample lamb tasting experience and nightly documentaries for the hotel guests.
The staff were all friendly and courteous and customer service was good.

What could be improved: The following is not a direct issue with the hotel, rather it is a consideration when staying at Rio Serano, visiting Torres del Paine and surrounding areas.
While the location provided an excellent view of the Rio Serano and Torres del Paine mountains, because of the poor road conditions (unpaved, potholed, gravel, ...) it turns the drives to and from Torres del Paine or any other close-by areas a fairly long distance, somewhat noisy unpleasant drive and high potential for and inevitable tire failures (I took my own tire repair kit and air pump, luckily i only needed to use the air pump which saved me grief and the trip). The road/driveway towards the hotel entrance was extremely poor in March 2025 and needs to be resurfaced.

The views from the hotel and our room were spectacular. From morning to dusk, just superb. The rooms were comfortable, bathrooms a little dated, but functional. Food generally good. Staff friendly and helpful. Location good for self driving to the Torres del Paine.

What could be improved: A lot of bus tour groups came to the hotel and made meal times a bit crowded and unpleasant. One breakfast, a lot of the food was gone and the kitchen did not keep up with the demand. We ended up having to leave before the eggs etc were replenished.
