Remota Patagonia Lodge

Ruta 9 Puerto Natales, 6160000 Puerto Natales, Chile

Guest reviews: 8.4

HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what hits you first at Remota? The silence. I mean, you think you know quiet until you’re standing on this property along Ruta 9, watching the Patagonian steppe roll out endlessly in every direction. The lodge sits about 1.5 kilometers outside Puerto Natales proper – close enough that you’re not completely isolated, but far enough that the town’s fishing boat horns and late-night bar chatter fade into nothing.

The building itself is honestly pretty striking – this long, low structure that seems to float above the landscape on stilts. The architects clearly knew what they were doing because every common area window frames Torres del Paine in the distance like a postcard you’d never believe was real. Check-in is refreshingly straightforward (no upselling, thank god), and the staff actually seems to know the area instead of just reading from scripts. The rooms are what I’d call understated luxury – think warm wood, floor-to-ceiling windows, and heated bathroom floors that you’ll appreciate after a day hiking in Patagonian wind. Fair warning though: the Wi-Fi can be spotty, especially when weather rolls in from the mountains, but honestly… that might be a feature, not a bug.

What really sets this place apart is how they handle the whole “gateway to Patagonia” thing without feeling touristy. The restaurant sources lamb from local estancias, and their pisco sours are dangerously good – I may have had one too many while watching the sunset paint the mountains pink and orange. The concierge team knows Torres del Paine like the back of their hand and can arrange everything from boat trips to Balmaceda Glacier to horseback riding with actual gauchos (not the theme park version). Parking is never an issue since most guests are flying into Punta Arenas anyway, but if you’re driving the Ruta 40 route up from Argentina like we did, there’s plenty of space and they’ll even help arrange a car wash to get the Patagonian dust off. The only real downside? March through May can get pretty windy – like, hold-onto-your-hat-or-lose-it windy – but the trade-off is fewer crowds and some of the most dramatic skies you’ll ever see. That 8.4 rating feels about right; it’s not perfect, but it’s exactly what you want for exploring this part of the world.

Unusual and beautiful architectural building complex. Great views of Lake. Comfortable beds. WiFi terrible in room. Only able to use WiFi in common areas which had comfortable seating. Needs covered access to swimming pool given the weather conditions being cold and windy most of the time. Virtually no one dared venture outside to use the building with the pool. Quite a pity. We paid half board and were delighted with the 3 course dining options available every night which included a glass of wine. Would have been nice to have a small fridge and tea/coffee making in room. Lighting in bathroom very poor. A bit of a walk into town. We paid extra for packed lunches for one of our tours. Not bad.

What could be improved: Don’t come here for the spa, although it looks lovely it isn’t well run. The indoor pool is pleasant but the outdoor jacuzzi wasn’t hot so we couldn’t use it and no explanation of when it would be hot. The sauna was good and hot (mixed sauna in the men’s changing area, the women only sauna in the women’s changing area wasn’t as hot but that might suit some people). Unfortunately the next morning the women’s sauna was hardly warm and the mixed sauna wasn’t on, I had to ask them to turn it on. We only had an hour before needing to go and checkout so it didn’t get up to temperature in that time. Both days the showers in the men and women’s bathrooms didn’t have hot water.

The lodge is very pretty. The decoration is beautiful. The bed is very comfortable and the views are amazing from both the facilities and the room. The staff at the restaurant were very nice. The dinner buffet was very good, nice selection of Chilean wines.

What could be improved: • Their policy is not to have wifi in the rooms. We were okay with that, a little detox can be nice. However, wifi signal was quite poor in the common areas.
• The staff at the reception was not particularly hospitable or warm. They were helpful though.
• FYI - Laundry service was quite expensive (almost 3,000 pesos for a piece of underwear)
We were also not happy with the spa facilities and services. There were small details that did not allow us to fully relax:
• You have to walk outside for a minute from the hotel to the spa which was not very nice as it was raining and very windy. They could offer an umbrella to walk outside for example.
• It was quite cold inside the spa facilities. Some people (including us) had to ask for an additional towel to get covered from the cold but after a couple of people asked they mentioned out of the blue the policy was to give 1 towel per person.
• There was no hot water in the showers of the spa during our stay - even after complaining about it. The staff pretended that it did work.
• The unisex sauna was turned off so it took a while to get warm.
• The bowl and spoon to pour water on the coals in the sauna were broken.
• We got two massages of 50 min. After the massage therapists were 10 min late, we both got our massage.
• My partner’s therapist got confused and stopped the massage after 30 min and left the room. My partner told her that the massage was 50 min so she continued but did not follow the massage style my partner requested.
• We also had some difficulties in booking a massage even if we asked it in advance via Booking.

All in all, the hotel is nice but needs some improvements in the spa area.

Decor and views are amazing.

What could be improved: Wi-Fi is only available in the common areas, and the pool doesn't have Wi-Fi either.

Very eclectic decor. Staff were excellent. Room was a good size

What could be improved: Was a little bit of a hike to town which limited eating options. WiFi only available in lobby area

Comfortable, big rooms, great outlooks, lots of spaces for reading or a drink. Bar and restaurant staff were wonderful, restaurant was good. Spa are was great.

What could be improved: Staff were not helpful with excursions. Despite the pre-arrival messaging of organised excursions (even though we hadn’t booked the all-inclusive package we were happy to pay for additional activities), we couldn’t get any traction with the staff on availability and in fact any options at all. May have been that we weren’t asking the right questions or using the right phrasing, however was disappointed by this.

Unique setting, big room, views of water and mountains. Room Key holder.

What could be improved: Walk to town is kind of far if weather is disagreeable.
