HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know what caught me off guard about the Keo Hotel? It’s actually way more sophisticated than you’d expect for Ovalle. I mean, this isn’t Santiago or Valparaíso – we’re talking about a mining town in the Norte Chico region – but walking into the lobby, you get this unexpected sense of “oh, okay, they really went for it here.” The casino element definitely elevates the whole vibe, though honestly, it’s not overwhelming if you’re not into gambling. The hotel side feels pretty separate from all the slot machine action.

The location on Avenida Manuel Penafiel is actually perfect for exploring Ovalle without dealing with the chaos of the town center. You’re close enough to walk to the main plaza if you want that authentic small-town Chilean experience, but far enough out that you’re not hearing street vendors at 6 AM or dealing with the market crowds. Parking was surprisingly easy – none of that cramped European-style situation you sometimes get at Chilean hotels. The rooms themselves have this clean, modern feel that works well after a day of exploring the Limarí Valley or if you’ve been out visiting the pisco distilleries (which, let’s be honest, is probably why you’re in this part of Chile anyway). The AC actually works properly too, which matters more than you’d think during those scorching summer months when the Norte Chico heat gets brutal.

What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to get that most guests are either here for business related to the mining industry or they’re tourists using Ovalle as a base for the surrounding attractions. They’re genuinely helpful with directions to places like the Monumento Natural Pichasca or the Valle del Encanto petroglyphs – not just the generic tourist-map stuff, but actual practical advice about timing and road conditions. The restaurant food is solid too, nothing revolutionary but they do a decent job with local specialties, and the breakfast spread works well if you’re heading out early for day trips. The 8.1 rating feels about right – it’s not going to blow your mind, but it delivers on what you need in a place like Ovalle. Honestly, given the limited upscale options in this part of Chile, having a reliable 4-star property with a bit of character makes a real difference when you’re planning a Norte Chico adventure.

The rooms are comfortable, and the cleaning was exceptional. The cleaning personal was friendly, and they did their work well.

What could be improved: After the pandemic the hotel changed for bad. We stayed there just before that and there was nothing to complain, so we were happy to return. They now organise open door parties with an extremely loud music until 5 in the morning. Sound that you cannot avoid no matter what. I've asked them if they can turn down the music just a little, but they just said "the music will be on until 5 am". I understand they are trying to find different ways of an income, but making it impossible for the normal visitors to stay is not the way. 3 of 7 nights the noise was until the very early morning, not allowing us to rest at all. The communication with the hotel is really bad, close to non existing. I had to ask the support from booking for and assistance in order to get hold of someone at the reception. I wrote them at least 4 emails, and I have nothing in return. I think they should educate themselves a bit more about the hospitality part of the industry.
The complimentary coffee/tea in the rooms is not complimentary at all. And if you need to visit the pool that they so much advertise you have to pay for it, even you are guest of the hotel.
The style of the hotel is good and it has a potential. I hope they can change for good.
