I’ll be honest – when I first pulled up to Las Lomitas de Guayacan along that winding Camino al Volcán, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The drive from Santiago takes you through some pretty dramatic scenery as you head toward the Andes, and by the time you hit San José de Maipo, you’re already feeling like you’ve escaped the city hustle. This place sits right in that sweet spot where the valley starts opening up toward the mountains, and you know what? The setting alone is worth the drive.

The cabañas themselves have this rustic-meets-comfortable vibe that actually works. I mean, you’re not getting marble bathrooms or anything fancy, but there’s something really appealing about the wood construction and the way they’ve tucked these little buildings into the landscape. What surprised me most was how quiet it gets at night – you’re close enough to the main road that you don’t feel isolated, but far enough that you actually hear the river and wind instead of traffic. The spa facilities are honestly better than I expected for a 3-star place. Nothing over-the-top, but the treatments use local ingredients and the massage therapists clearly know what they’re doing. After a day of hiking or just dealing with Santiago’s chaos, it hits the spot.

Here’s the thing about this area that most people don’t realize until they visit – San José de Maipo is kind of the gateway to some incredible outdoor stuff, but it’s not touristy in that overwhelming way. You’ve got the Cajón del Maipo right there, the hot springs at Colina are maybe thirty minutes away, and if you’re into wine (and honestly, who isn’t when you’re in Chile?), there are some smaller vineyards in the foothills that hardly anyone talks about. The staff at Las Lomitas actually gave me directions to this little family winery that I never would have found otherwise. Check-in was smooth, parking is easy – important when you’re dealing with mountain roads and rental cars – and they’re pretty flexible about timing, which matters when you’re trying to coordinate day trips. The 8.6 rating makes sense to me. It’s not luxury, but it delivers on what it promises, and sometimes that’s exactly what you want. Especially when you wake up to those mountain views and realize you’re breathing actual clean air for the first time in months.
