Look, I’ve stayed at plenty of places around New Zealand’s South Island, but this cottage on Closeburn Road honestly caught me off guard in the best way possible. You know how sometimes a place just feels right the moment you pull up? That’s exactly what happened here. The gravel driveway curves just enough that you don’t see the full lake view until you’re practically at the front door – and then boom, there’s Lake Wakatipu stretching out like someone painted it there just for you.

The cottage itself is one of those places that gets the details right without trying too hard. I mean, sure, it’s got the spa (which, honestly, I used way more than I planned to), but it’s the little things that stick with you. The windows are positioned perfectly so you’re catching that morning light across the water while you’re having coffee, and the kitchen actually has sharp knives and decent pots – you’d be surprised how rare that is in holiday rentals. The whole place feels lived-in but not worn, if that makes sense. Someone clearly put thought into the layout because you’re never fighting for space, even though it’s not massive. The bedroom faces the lake too, so you wake up to that view every morning, which… well, it spoils you pretty quickly.

What really sets this place apart though is the location – and I don’t just mean the obvious lake access. Closeburn Road is far enough from Queenstown that you’re not dealing with the tour bus chaos, but close enough that a quick drive gets you to Arrowtown or even the Remarkables if you’re feeling ambitious. The area stays pretty quiet, especially in the evenings when the day-trippers head back to town. You’ll hear the occasional boat during the day, but honestly, the sound of water lapping against the shore becomes this perfect background noise. The owners clearly know the area well because they left recommendations for a little café in Arrowtown that I never would have found otherwise – the kind of local spot that doesn’t show up in guidebooks but serves the best lamb and kumara pie you’ll have. Parking’s easy, check-in was smooth (they actually met me there, which was nice), and the whole experience just felt… authentic, I guess. Not like staying in some corporate hotel where everything’s the same. This is the kind of place you book again before you’ve even left.
