The Chancellor on Hobson

1 Hobson Street, 1010 Auckland, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
Look, I’ll be straight with you about The Chancellor on Hobson – it’s one of those places that just works, you know? Right on Hobson Street, which honestly couldn’t be more central if they tried. I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from the waterfront and about five minutes from Queen Street if you’re into the shopping scene. The building itself has this sort of understated Auckland charm – not flashy, but solid in that reliable Kiwi way. When I first walked in, the lobby had this clean, business-hotel vibe that actually felt more welcoming than sterile, if that makes sense.
What really got me was how they’ve nailed the whole “comfortable without trying too hard” thing. The rooms are properly sized (thank god, because some Auckland hotels think a shoebox is acceptable), and honestly, the beds are way better than you’d expect for a 3.5-star spot. You’ll sleep well here – I actually had to check my phone the first morning because I’d slept so soundly I lost track of time. The bathrooms are modern enough, good water pressure, and they’ve got those little touches that show someone’s paying attention, like decent toiletries and towels that don’t feel like sandpaper. From the higher floors, you get glimpses of the harbor between the other buildings, which is pretty lovely when the afternoon light hits just right.
Here’s the thing though – location is everything with this place, and The Chancellor absolutely delivers. You’re close enough to walk to the Viaduct for dinner (maybe 8-10 minutes), but far enough from the weekend chaos that you won’t be dealing with drunk tourists at 2 AM. The Sky Tower’s right there if you’re into that sort of thing, and catching a bus or train is dead easy since you’re so close to Britomart. Parking can be a bit of a mission in this part of town – well, it’s Auckland city center, so that’s hardly surprising – but the hotel staff actually know their stuff about nearby options. I found the service to be genuinely helpful without being over the top, which is refreshing. They’ll give you proper directions, not just point vaguely down the street. For what you’re paying, especially compared to some of the pricier places closer to the water, you’re getting solid value. It’s not going to blow your mind, but it’ll definitely do the job properly, and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

The room was great , bed was very comfortable, room great. Hotel was within 10 minutes to everything I required. Transport close, waterfront, attractions.
What could be improved: TV was a pain, channels spread to far apart or not working.

During my stay with my son, we enjoyed the indoor pool and spa. I would appreciate it if the indoor pool water was a bit warmer during the winter months.

Very clean staff are very helpful, great location. And value for money. The spa and pool are also great.

Oldfield from New Zealand (5 June 2025)
Loved the apartment for location
What could be improved: The bath needs a repair
Oladapo from Canada (3 June 2025)
Location and Staff were excellent What could be improved: Very dated. So significantly retro, needs a lot of renovation to become transported into the present. The bathroom was a nightmare. High steppage bath with low ceiling, couldn’t stand to take a shower! Leeward rooms, those backing out to the front are so under ventilated on the first floor,...
