I mean, the location is sort of perfect – close enough that you can stroll to those lakefront restaurants everyone talks about, but far enough that you’re not dealing with the party crowds stumbling past your window at 2 AM.

The motel itself has this really unpretentious charm that I wasn’t expecting. The units are genuinely spacious (not that cramped “cozy” nonsense you sometimes get), and they’ve clearly put thought into the little things that actually matter when you’re traveling. The kitchenettes are properly equipped – like, you can actually cook a decent meal if you want to, which is great because honestly, eating out for every meal in Taupo adds up fast. The beds are comfortable enough that I didn’t wake up feeling like I’d been wrestling with a brick, and the heating works well, which matters more than you’d think during those chilly Taupo mornings, especially if you’re visiting outside summer.

What really sold me on this place was how quiet it gets at night. You can hear the lake lapping against the shore if you open your windows – it’s this gentle, constant sound that’s actually pretty soothing. The owners clearly know their stuff too; check-in was smooth, parking is right there (no circling the block hunting for a spot), and they’re the kind of people who’ll give you actual local recommendations instead of just pointing you toward the obvious tourist traps. They mentioned this great little coffee spot about five minutes away that I never would have found otherwise. The whole setup feels like it’s run by people who’ve actually stayed in motels themselves and fixed all the annoying stuff that usually drives you crazy. Sure, it’s not flashy or Instagram-perfect, but sometimes that’s exactly what you want – a place that just works really well without trying too hard.
