Grafton Cottage & Chalets

304 Grafton Road, 3500 Thames, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what struck me first about Grafton Cottage & Chalets? The location is actually perfect if you want that sweet spot between being close to Thames township but not stuck in the middle of tourist chaos. It’s right on Grafton Road – honestly, I drove past it twice before I spotted the entrance because it sits back a bit from the main drag, which turned out to be a blessing when I was trying to sleep.
The whole setup feels more like staying at someone’s well-appointed bach than a typical hotel, and I mean that in the best way possible. The chalets have this authentic New Zealand cottage vibe without being kitschy about it – think exposed beams and proper wooden furniture rather than mass-produced stuff. What really got me was how quiet it stays, even though you’re literally five minutes from Thames’ main street. I could actually hear the bellbirds in the morning, which doesn’t happen at most places this close to town. The rooms are genuinely spacious too – I had enough room to spread out all my tramping gear without feeling like I was living in a shoebox. And the kitchenette actually works properly (you’d be surprised how rare that is), which saved me from having to eat every meal at the local cafés, though honestly, Thames has some decent spots if you know where to look.
Here’s the thing that sets this place apart from other accommodation around the Coromandel – the owners clearly get what travelers actually need. There’s proper parking right outside your chalet, which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling tramping packs or beach gear. The check-in was refreshingly straightforward, none of that overly complicated key card nonsense. I also appreciated that they don’t blast you with upselling – just good, solid accommodation that does what it promises. The whole place has this relaxed, unpretentious feel that matches Thames perfectly. You’re close enough to walk into town for dinner or supplies, but far enough removed that you’re not dealing with Main Road traffic noise. Plus, if you’re using Thames as a base for exploring the peninsula – which honestly makes sense given how central it is – this gives you easy access to both the eastern beaches and the Karangahake Gorge without feeling like you’re camping in a carpark.
