Bay Palm Motel

84 Girven Road, 3116 Mount Maunganui, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Bay Palm Motel on Girven Road – I mean, it’s tucked away in this quiet residential stretch that honestly feels more like someone’s neighborhood than a tourist strip. But that’s actually what makes this place work so well. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Mount Main Beach (the locals just call it “Main Beach”), and while everyone’s crowding into those flashy beachfront places that cost twice as much, you’re getting the same stunning Tauranga Harbour views without the chaos. The motel itself has that classic Kiwi roadside charm – think clean, no-fuss rooms that someone’s clearly put thought into. The units are bigger than you’d expect, and I loved that they’ve got proper kitchenettes, not those sad little bar fridges most motels stick you with. You can actually cook a decent breakfast or store your leftovers from that amazing Thai place on Maunganui Road (seriously, don’t miss it).
What really sold me on Bay Palm was the vibe – it’s got this relaxed, almost retro feel without being daggy about it. The pool area is small but gets gorgeous afternoon sun, and there’s something satisfying about having a swim after a day climbing the Mount (which, by the way, is about a fifteen-minute walk if you take the track from the base). The staff genuinely seem to care about the place, not just going through the motions, and they’ll actually give you proper local tips instead of just handing you a tourist brochure. Parking’s easy – always a relief in Mount Maunganui where some streets are absolute nightmares during summer. The rooms stay surprisingly quiet considering you’re close to the main drag, though you might catch some early morning bird action, which I actually found pretty charming.
Look, this isn’t going to be the fanciest place you’ve ever stayed, and the décor won’t win any design awards, but that 7.7 rating makes perfect sense when you factor in the location and value. You’re getting clean, comfortable accommodation in one of New Zealand’s best beach towns without paying resort prices. It’s the kind of place where you spend your days out exploring – hitting Pilot Bay for a gentler swim, checking out the weekend markets, or just doing that mandatory Mount climb for the views – and you come back to somewhere that feels genuinely welcoming. Plus, being on Girven Road means you can walk to the shops and cafes but escape the summer crowds when you need to. It’s honest, unpretentious accommodation that does exactly what it promises, which honestly feels pretty refreshing these days.

Great location
What could be improved: Bed was very firm. Bathroom could use an update. Parking a bit cramped for a corner unit.
Leanne from Australia (29 March 2025)
Great location close to beach
Julie from New Zealand (25 March 2025)
The room was clean, the bed very comfortable and shower pressure was great. No traffic noise and close to the mall

Staff good, room comfy and great location
Nikolay from New Zealand (27 February 2025)
What could be improved: there are are no aircon in the rooms. So in the middle of summer days it was quite hot, but ventilation is good and dormer windows help too.
Tone from New Zealand (12 January 2025)
Enjoyed our stay. Easy access to where we needed to be
Alan from New Zealand (3 January 2025)
Property was well located next to Bayfair and a short drive to the main roads, but not so close that it was noisy. The staff were fantastic and rooms well kept. The price was fair.
What could be improved: There is no AC, so be careful over summer. The rooms are also beginning to show their age.
Siobhan from New Zealand (31 December 2024)
Heaps of space for 2 people, pool right outside our room and super close to everything in location
What could be improved: Could’ve had better air conditioning as upstairs got extremely hot and muggy even with a fan running
Joanna from Germany (25 December 2024)
It’s very clean and the staff is nice. The rooms have all you might need as a travelling family.
What could be improved: The rooms seem to be rather old.
