Gazeley Gem

11 Gazeley Avenue 5, 3216 Hamilton, New Zealand
HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what caught me off guard about the Gazeley Gem? I was expecting another generic boutique hotel when I pulled up to 11 Gazeley Avenue, but this place actually has some character. Hamilton’s not exactly known for its luxury accommodations – I mean, it’s a solid city but usually you’re just passing through on your way to Rotorua or the Coromandel – so finding a proper 4-star spot that doesn’t feel like a chain hotel was honestly refreshing.
The location is pretty clever, actually. Gazeley Avenue sits in this quiet residential pocket that’s close enough to the city center that you can walk to the river walkways and decent cafes (there’s this little place called Chim Choo Ree about ten minutes away that does incredible coffee), but far enough out that you’re not dealing with weekend party noise from the university crowd. I stayed on a Thursday night and it was dead quiet – you could hear the tui birds in the morning, which is something you don’t expect in the middle of Hamilton. The parking situation is straightforward too, which anyone who’s tried to navigate central Hamilton on a busy day will appreciate.
What really sold me on this place was the attention to small details that someone clearly thought through. The rooms have these thick curtains that actually block out light – revolutionary concept, I know, but you’d be surprised how many places get this wrong. The beds are firm without being rock-hard, and they’ve got proper reading lights instead of those useless decorative lamps most hotels install. The bathroom had decent water pressure and honest-to-god hot water that didn’t take five minutes to warm up. Look, I’m not asking for miracles here, just basic competence, but the Gazeley Gem actually delivers on the fundamentals.
The staff genuinely seemed to know Hamilton well too – when I asked about decent dinner spots that weren’t chain restaurants, they pointed me toward Palate on Hood Street instead of just shrugging and handing me a tourist brochure. That 9.3 rating makes sense when you stay there; it’s not trying to be the fanciest place in New Zealand, but it does what it promises without any unpleasant surprises. If you’re in Hamilton for business or using it as a base to explore the Waikato region, this is honestly one of the better options. Just don’t expect a resort experience – it’s more like staying at a really well-run place that happens to be owned by people who actually care about hospitality.

The house is beautiful and clean. Both rooms are spacious with their own ensuite bathrooms. Issac and Annie were very welcoming and made sure we had plenty of supplies. It is so much better than a hotel. We really love the apartment. Definitely our first choice when we visit Hamilton again.
Travis from New Zealand (16 April 2025)
Modern 2 bedroom apartment with ensuite attached to each room.
Clean, tidy, welcoming.
What could be improved: Initially I was a bit disappointed with location, as I'm not too familiar with Hamilton .But the street was quiet, and having a car it didn't take us long to get anywhere.

We liked everything about our stay . The place was perfect for us and our son to attend his graduation at the university of Waikato a short 10 minute walk away.
