I’ll be honest – when I first heard “spa motel,” I wasn’t sure what to expect from Aubyn Court, but this place completely changed my perspective on what a motel can be. It’s tucked right on Ferguson Street, which puts you in this sweet spot where you’re close enough to the Palmerston North city center to walk everywhere that matters, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with weekend noise from the Square.

The whole setup here is surprisingly sophisticated – I mean, they’ve managed to take the classic motel layout (you know, park right outside your door) and elevate it with genuine spa facilities that actually feel luxurious, not like an afterthought. The rooms themselves have this clean, modern vibe without being sterile, and honestly, the beds are some of the most comfortable I’ve encountered in New Zealand. What really got me though was how quiet everything stays, even when the place is full. You’d think being on Ferguson Street might mean traffic noise, but the way they’ve positioned and soundproofed the buildings works really well.

The spa component is where this place really shines – and I’m someone who’s usually skeptical about hotel spas because they’re often just fancy names for basic facilities. But they’ve got proper treatment rooms and the kind of attention to detail that makes you want to extend your stay just to book another massage. The staff actually knows what they’re doing, which makes all the difference. Parking is straightforward (thank god, because Palmerston North can be annoying that way), and check-in was refreshingly efficient without feeling rushed. You’re also perfectly positioned to hit up the cafes along Broadway or grab dinner at one of the decent restaurants near the Square without needing to drive. The only minor thing I’d mention is that the breakfast setup, while good, tends to get a bit crowded around 8:30 on weekends – but honestly, that’s a pretty minor complaint when everything else works so well. This is the kind of place that makes you realize Palmerston North has more going for it than people give it credit for, and you’ll probably find yourself planning reasons to come back.
